Abstract

Garcinia solomonensis (A.C. Smith) Kosterm. and G. volkensii (Ltbch.) Kosterm. are not valid. Hence the new names Garcinia crassi-folia Seetharam and G. quadrilocularis Seetharam are proposed.

Abstract

A monograph of Pometia, which extends from Ceylon throughout Malaysia to Samoa, with a few stations in SE. Asia and Formosa. Two species are recognized: P. ridleyi and P. pinnata, the latter having a particular pattern of alternating- nerves. Pometia pinnata is extremely variable and clearly still in process of differentiation. From the wealth of forms, 8 formae have been selected for taxonomic recognition, 1 of them is newly described, 7 are new combinations; characters are found in the leaves and the inflorescence. Besides, a number of unnamed paramorphs have been described. The distribution of the variability has been sketched for each region. Details about ecology etc. are given. Specimens are cited where appropriate and a general Identification List is given at the end.

Abstract

In Malaysia the genus Orthosiphon has gained some general interest,because one of its species, well-known under its vernacular name kumis kutjing- or remukdjung, has been recognized as a noteworthy medicinal plant, besides being of some horticultural value.In the recent treatment by ADHLBERT in the emergency edition of Backer's 'Beknopte flora van Java'(1954) three species have been recognized, viz O. petiolaris MIQ., O. aristatiis (BL.) MIQ., and O. stamineus BTH. In my opinion the differences between the latter two are so small that they cannot be recognized as good species; in the herbarium they appear indistinguishable.My study has been based on the specimens in the Leyden and Utrecht herbaria.

Abstract

The monotypic genus Cullenia was established by Wight (Icones PI. Ind. or. 5 (1) : pi. 1761-62 & text, 1851), who differentiated it from Durio Adans. mainly by the lack of a corolla and the position and shape of the anthers.The only species, originally described as Durio ceylanicus by Gardner, was cited by Wight as Cullenia excelsa Wight. K. Schumann corrected the specific epithet rather casually and atributed it (wrongly)to Wight. Bentham (in Benth. & Hook.,Gen. pi. 1: 212. 1867); Baillon (Hist. pi. 4: 159. 1872), Masters (in Hook, f., Fl. Br. Ind. 1: 350. 1874) and Beccari (Malesia 3: 219. 1889) accepted the genus.Bakhuizen van den Brink (in Bull. Jard. bot. Buitenzorg III, 6: 228.1924) incorporated the genus in Durio.In my opinion Cullenia represents a "good" genus by its lack of corolla.Alston, although accepting Bakhuizen's reduction, informed me personally, that he, too, is inclined to consider Cullenia different from Durio.The pollen were described as being naked and pedicellate by Gardner; this wrong statement was corrected by Wight; the anthers are pedicellate and one-celled.In this paper a new Cullenia species is described, which strengthens the position of the genus; both species are restricted to the rain forest region of Ceylon and the Southern Indian Peninsula.

Abstract

TURNER, I. M. 2018. A new combination in Pseuderanthemum (Acanthaceae). Reinwardtia 17(1): 55–57. — A new combination is provided in Pseuderanthemum for Eranthemum diantherum Roxb., an Acanthaceae species from the Moluccas. Pseuderanthemum depauperatum Merr. is a synonym of Pseuderanthemum diantherum. Lectotypes for Eranthemum diantherum and Pseuderanthemum depauperatum are designated.

Abstract

Comparison of all the collected material, together with the cursory description of Laumoniera Nooteboom, made it clear that the only difference with the genus Brucea is the shape of the stigma. This is not considered to be at the generic level and the genus is sunk into Brucea and the species renamed Brucea bruceadelpha (Nooteboom) Kostermans, comb, nov.

Abstract

Since 1884 the name Cyperus zollingeri Steud. has been misapplied to a common tropical species, the correct name of which is C. tenuieulrnis Boeck.It appears that C.rubroviridis Chermez.(1919) and C. ramosiiKiikenth.(1925) are synonymous with C. zollingeri Steud. (1855).Cyperus leucoeephalus Retz, and C. pulehellus R. Br. are treated as specifically distinct.The Philippine record of C.leucoeephalus is referred to C. pulehellus.A tentative arrangement of the Malaysian material of the polymorphous Cyperus sanguinolentus Vahl is given.Mariscus maritimus Miq. is reduced to Cyperus dubius Rottb.,C. pulcherrimus f. retiglwmis Valck. Sur. to the species.The previous Malaysian records of Cyperus stenostachyus Benth.and C. polystachyos 1. longispiculatus Valck. Sur. are erroneous. A survey of the distribution of some Malaysian species is given.The following new combinations are made: Cyperus trialatus (Boeck.) Kern; C. sanguinolentus ssp. melanocephahis (Miq.) Kern, ssp.cyrtostachys (Miq.) Kern, and ssp. teijsmannii (Miq.) Kern.

Abstract

RUGAYAH & SUNARTI, S. 2008. Two new wild species of Averrhoa (Oxalidaceae) from Indonesia. Reinwardtia 12(4): 325 – 331. — Based on living collections cultivated in Bogor Botanical Gardens and several herbarium specimens kept in Herbarium Bogoriense, Averrhoa dolichocarpa Rugayah & Sunarti (from New Guinea) and A. leucopetala Rugayah & Sunarti (from North Sulawesi) are described as new species. They are compared with A. carambola L. and A. bilimbi L. the only other known species so far.
