Abstract

The morphological variation in the ebony and silver leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus auratus and T. cristatus) from Southeast Asia; Thailand, Malaya, Bintan, Sumatra, Serasan-Natuna, Kalimantan and Java were studied using multivariate analysis approaches. The results showed that clinal variation in skull; dental and dentary morphology was found in Java. The skull; dental and dentary characters showed an increase from West to East with Central Java as an intermediate fonn. Consequently, in Java there should be only one subspecies, T. a. auratus. Meanwhile, there are fourmorpholgical groups of Trachipithecus cristatus, those are of Thailand, Malaya-Sumatra-Kalimantan, Bintan and Natuna. The Malayan population, presumably is the same as Bintan population while Sumatra-Kalimantan forms an intermediate.

Abstract

The phylogeny of Glyphodes Cuenee (14 species) and four outgroup species (Feltia jaculifera, Metallarcha aureodiscalis, Talanga sexpunctalis and Agrioghrypta eurytusalis) was inferred fromnucleotide sequence variation across a 686-bp region in the CO I gene. Over the entire 686-bp region, 19.9% sites were informative (3.35% in the 1st-, 0.29% in the 2nd - and 16.32% in 3rd - codon position). The results also showed that the base composition of this region was high A+T biased (C= 0.258) and the averages ofestimated sequence divergence in the comparisons between species within and between groups were 7.1% and 9.0%, respectively. In general, the phylogeny based on CO I gene by including all substitutions or any partial data set used in this study was not only able to recover almost the three monophyletic groups withinGlyphodes as previously recovered by morphological phylogeny but also showed more clearly the relationships among them: Glyphodes group 2 was branched off first then followed by group 3 and 1.Key words: CO I, Glyphodes, morphology, phylogeny

Abstract

Species of Tethionea Pascoe, 1869, Callidiopini, in the collection of Museum of Zoologicum Bogoriense are reviewed. Two new species of the genus are described, T. peggieae sp. nov. and T. oculata  sp. nov., both from Papua Province, Indonesia. In addition, T. unicolor Pascoe, T. strumosa Pascoe and T. tridentata Pascoe are redescribed. Their male genitalia are documented and illustrated in detail. In particular, the ejaculatory duct complexes of endophalli are carefully observed, as well as 8th sternites and tergites.  For T. oculata sp. nov., the female genitalia are described. Morphological and taxonomical aspects of these species are discussed.

Abstract

The giant rat of Flares, Papagomys armandvillei (Jentink, 1892) lives in small remnants of relatively undisturbed forest on the island of Flores, Eastern Indonesia. It is a rare animal but in recent years specimens have been collected from Ruteng, Manggarai, (Ruteng is the capital of district Manggarai) West Flores. It appears to be most abundant (or most easily obtained) in the area around Ruteng in West Flares. Within museum collections it is represented by 13 specimens, the vast majority collectedprior to 1970. From the locality records of 13 specimens the species is, or was, distributed in Potjong, Sika, Mboera, Ruteng, Manggarai, Nunang and Wewo Pongkor, Flores, Indonesia. It is also presented as subfossils of recent age from Liang Toge, a cave near Warukia, 1 km south of Lepa, in Manggarai District (ill printed as Menggarai Province), Western Flores (Musser, 1981). Also present in this deposit are the fragmentary remains of a closely related species of giant rat which has been described asPapagomys theodorverhoeveni by Musser (1981). This material consisted of 18 mandibular fragments with either partial or intack tooth rows (Hooijer, 1957, Musser 1981). We record here a modem specimen among other 4 specimens of Papagomys armandvillei collected after 1970, unfortunately represented only by skull and mandibles that was discovered in the collections of the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) during a check following the transfer of the mammals (and other zoological collections) from the Bogor Botanical Garden to new modem building at Cibinong, 23 km north of Bogor City.Keywords: Taxonomy, giant rats, status, Flores

Abstract

The Cirrospilini LaSalle, 2000, belongs to the Eulophinae, along withEulophini and Elasmini. This tribe consists of about 17 genera and almost 300 species, which are ectoparasitoids, mainly on Diptera, Lepidoptera and Coleoptera in semi-concealed situations. Some species may act as obligate or facultative hyperparasitoids and a few species are gall-formers. Historically, the genera included in the Cirrospilini have been placed in the Eulophinae and the Elachertinae sensu Ashmead, 1904. However, the relationships and the placement of genera into subfamilies or tribes have always been problematical. Based on the current evidence, it appears that the Cirrospilini is a monophyletic taxon and the sister-group of the Eulophini plus Elasmini. This paper summarizes the current taxonomic status and systematic background of the Cirrospilini.Key words: Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eulophidae, Eulophinae, tribe Cirrospilini, taxonomical review
