Abstract

Abstract

Ants are of high density on the host plant of golden tortoise beetle, Ipomoea carnea, and are being attracted by extrafloral nectaries on petiols. They are important predators of immature stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) of the beetles. The experiment was aimed to know how the golden tortoise beetles defense themselves against ants on I. carnea. The results indicated that golden tortoise beetle, both larvae and adults showed odd habits. They have a specific external organ, a protective camouflage with excreta of the larvae and oviposition strategy. The ant-beetle interaction on the host plants are discussed.

Abstract

A study on the influences of alcohol extract of Meniran or Phyllanthus niruri L. (Euphorbiaceae) to blood glucose concentration in rabbits (Oxytolagus cuniculus) had been carried out using glucose tolerance method. The extract was administered orally at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/kg BW.Prior to tfie extract administration, all rabbits were put on hyperglycemic condition by injecting glucose solution intravenally at dose of 0.5 g/kg BW.The blood glucose concentration was measured every one hour starting at 2 hours before and until 7 hours after administration. Antidiabetic drug, tolbutamid 250 mg/kgBW.was used as control. The results indicated that extract with dose at 30 mg/kg BW gave a hypoglycemic effect similar to control (Tolbutamid). The blood glucose decreased regularly as the extract dose being higher.Using statistical analyses showed significant differences among the groups, especially after the 2 and 3 hours of treatment (P<0.05).

Abstract

Rainfall and runoff harvesting study at the Kali Garang basin, Semarang under the cooperation program between Centre for Soil and Agroclimate,Agency of Agriculture Research and Development (CIRAD) France and Government of Central Jawa for improving soil productivity, controlling flood and drought are presented in this paper. The results show that through water harvesting it is possible to increase diversity, improving added value and decreasing agriculture risks of agriculture commodity. Moreover rehabilitation of degraded land and soil conservation practices can be promoted.

Abstract

This study was aimed at studying the effectiveness of alcohol, formaldehyde and their mixture in inhibiting fungal growth. This study contained two step. The first step was fungal isolation from specimen. One isolate was then selected to be inoculated into alcoholat various concentration (15%, 30%, 50% and 70%) with or without formaldehyde mixture. The second was fungal inoculation intoalcohol at various concentration (15%, 30%, 50%, dan 70%) with or without formaldehyde. The effectiveness of these subtances as specimen preservatives for shrimp were studied after six months incubation time. From the fisrt step, only genus group Monascus was isolated from seven specimens(Mabuia multifasciata, Myotis muricola,Chironax melanocephalus,Naya naya sputratrix, Miniopterus schreibersi blepotis, unidentified shrimp, unidentified Coelenterata). From the second step, the best growth of isolate Monascus sp.MM which isolated from the fisrt step was achieved in 70% alcohol. This fungus was not able to grow in both formaldehyde and its mixture with alcohol (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4). The results also showed that Monascus growth was observed in alcohol with not sterilized shrimps without inoculation with Monascus sp. MM. It is recommended to apply mixture alcohol 70% with formaldehyde 1% at ratio 4:1 as animal specimen preservative to inhibit fungal growth.

Abstract

Mangosteen seeds were irradiated with gamma rays from Co dosages 2.5 Gy, 5 Gy, 7.5 Gy, 10 Gy, 20 Gy, 40 Gy and 60 Gy. The germination rates of irradiated seeds were reduced by an average of 20 % at 20 Gy, 67 % at 40 Gy and no seed germination at 60 Gy.The effects of the treatment on the survival of irradiated seeds were observed.Gamma rays at low dosage (2.5 Gy) was stimulating to seedling growth. The best dosages for inducing variation were around 10 - 20 Gy;variation induced by the treatment included total leaves number and seedling height.

Abstract

The study of genomic diversity in molecular level on two sub-species i.e indica andjavanica rice types were represented by cv.Pelita 1/1 and Rojolele respectively.Javanica called padi bulu due to long aunt on the grain. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)with 17 primers have been used for detecting genomic variation between these two sub-species.Results of experiment indicated that 12 out of 17 primers showed polymorphic DNA.This study would assist plant breeder to decide, whether to improve rice quality through crossing between javanica and indica is necessary.

Abstract

Study on the differentiation of several explants by in vitro culture were conducted on Philodendron goeldii for propagationpurposes.Activated charcoal added to the initiating medium did not improve the development of the cultures. In general all type of explants were successfully differentiated into plantlets in all media tested. The most potential explants for propagation of this species are the shoot tip and the stem.Addition of 0.3 ppm NAA to the basal medium with different cytokinins induced roots development on shoot tips, petioles and young leaves cultures. The ability of culture to produce multiple shoots such as in medium with NAA + 2-iP or NAA + BA would give a better opportunity for in-vitro propagation of P. goeldii.

Abstract

A haploid breeding program was initiated to develop doubled haploid blast tolerance rice breeding via anther culture.Blast tolerant variety (Laka) was crossed with Kencana Bali (sensitive to blast).Anthers from F1 were cultured on two kind of media (combination of N6 macro salt and MS micro salt) containing 1 mg/l NAA + 0,1 mg/l kinetin called medium-1 and another one containing 1 mg/l 2,4-D + 0,1 mg/l kinetin called medium-2.Anthers were treated with cold shock (4 °C)for 5 and 10 days before cultured. Results of experiment showed that F1 plants derived anthers were able to form call Number ofplantlets were produced during anthers culture consisted of 482 green plants and 50 albinos. Most of green plants did not produced root.Root growth of plantlets were induced with 1.5-4.5 mg/l IBA in MS medium.
