The objective of this study was to obtain effective and beneficial microorganism specially fungi, which are able to stimulate and increase eggplant growth. Four lignocellulolytic fungi {Mucor sp. M13T, Aspergillus sp. M2P, Penicillium sp.M3P1, Penicillium sp. R 7.S and mixture of them) were evaluated for their ability to promote plant growth through provision of availability of soluble carbon finally stimulate beneficial microbial growth, and thus promoting eggplant growth. Aspergillus sp. M2P having cellulolytic activity (0.0612 U/ml) and Penicillium sp. M3P1 having ligninase capacity showing different plant growth stimulation on character and yield coefficient. Penicillium sp. M3P1 more effective to increase plant growth than that of control. While Aspergillus sp. M2P was less effective compared to Penicillium sp. M3P1. Therefore,we recommended using Penicillium sp. M3P1 as plant growth promoter for eggplant.

The simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in a single reactor using an activated sludge with cross-flow filtration was investigated. The reactor was a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), operated on three phase conditions, phase I was continuous aeration, phase II was intermittent aeration and phase III was intermittent aeration with methanol addition. The microbial properties on the nitrogen removal processes were monitored by measuring the ammonia decreasing and nitrate production rate. The denitrification rate was also calculated from N20 gas production by acetylene inhibition method. The experiment results show that the nitrification was occurred during the aeration condition, both in the phase I and II. The denitrification was occurred in the anoxic stage (phase III).The nitrate decreasing rate in the anoxic stage (phase IIIA) increased gradually reach the value of 0.19 th mg-N/1/min. on the 8 day operation. The nitrate decreasing rate increased to be 0.45 mg/l/min in the phase IIIB and reach up to 0.70 mg/l/min in the phase IIIC in which the methanol concentrations was increased from 762 mg/L to 1016 mg/L in the phase IIIB and phase IIIC, respectively. The increasing activity of denitrification resulted in decreasing the concentration of TOC in the reactor. More than 80% nitrogen removal occurred in phase III and TOC removal efficiency in phase III reach more than 90%.

Succinic acid (HOOC(CH2)2COOH) is commercial compound that primarily used in food products. This compound also used in textile industry for colouring process, drugs industry, paint, pernist and photography slice. Succinic acid usually produced in industry by chemical reaction and produce cyanide acid as by product. The objective of this research was to study the utilization of Pseudomonas sp. in produce succinic acid and to characterize of involved enzymes. The results showed that the enzyme optimally produce in log phase. The production rate of succinic acid formation was 0,982 mM/ml.h with the decrease of substrate consumption was 1,235 mM/ml.h. The yield of succinic acid during 81 hours fermentation was 81%. The optimum pH, temperature, Km and Vran were 7, 27°C, 90 mM, and 0,0002 mM/ml.h.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the effect of rice straw application on the growth of rice in two conditions of acid sulphate soils. An experiment was conducted in the glass house consisting of three treatment factors using the completely randomized design with three replications. The first factor was soil condition consisting of continuous application of rice straw and without application of rice straw during the last 5 years. The second factor was fresh application of rice straw consisting of application and without application, whereas the third factor was P application consisting of 3 rates of SP - 36 fertilizers.Parameters measured were plant height, tiller number and Fe toxicity score. Measurement were conducted at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after planting. Plant dry weight and P concentration in plant tissue were determined at 8 weeks after planting. The result showed the main effect of rice straw application was significant decrease on the tiller number of the rice plant at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after planting, whereas significant on plant height was observed at 2 and 4 weeks after planting. Based on the scoring of degree of Fe toxicity, it was concluded that the rice plant did not exhibit any effect of Fe toxicity.

The flowering phenology and floral behavior of Scutellaria discolor and S. slametensis were investigated. S. discolor is distributed over a wider range of habitats but S. slametensis is distributed over a restricted area on Mt. Slamet. Observations of flowering phenology and floral behavior were almost the same and pollination of cleistogamous flowers did not occur in both species.Based on our observations on floral and pollinator behavior, we consider both S. discolor and S.slametensis to have chasmo- and cleistogamous flowers.

A taxonomic study of the genus Begonia Blume (Begoniaceae) in South East Sulawesi (Mt. Mekongga and Mt. Watuwila) were conducted based on morphological characters. Six species of Begonia were discovered. Three previously known species (Begonia aptera Blume, B. flacca Irmschr. and B. hispidissima Warburgh.), two new species and one variety were proposed and on going for publication. Some colour pictures were displayed and potential uses of each species are presented.

Entering globalization market, Indonesian government could not reject any import of food products from overseas. To anticipate the possibility of porcine contaminants into processed meat products of imported food such as meat or chicken ball, sausage, tin meat etc., it is important to apply laboratory research on such particular matter in regard to ethical and certain religious concern. This study was intended to identify the possibility of porcine contaminants into either processed meat products or fresh meat.A technique of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied and PCR optimizing was conducted in advanced to obtain the right annealing temperature.Positive control of fresh pork meat was amplified to get porcine Leptin size which is 152bp fragment. Five samples of 4 meat balls and one fresh beef meat were individually collected for their DNA by either from minced or mashed after liquid nitrogen exposure then followed with a series of DNA extraction steps. PCR was assigned by using a specific primer of Leptin gene for porcine identification.Visualization of Leptin fragment was applied either on 1%, 2% of agarose gel or 10-20% gradient acrylamide gel.The result showed that all sample applied were not identified for containing porcine contaminants while positive control was on the right size of 152bp of Leptin gene. Specific primer used in this study was proved that there was not identified porcine Leptin gene on the negative control (fresh beef meat). This study suggests that a method of PCR is a simple analytical method for identification of porcine contaminants and visualization on 2% agarose gel is a cheaper and quicker method while by gradient acrylamide gel showing more clear band however this method is time consuming and expensive.

Members of the genus Pandanus (Pandanaceae) are used by Indonesian people as food, medicinal and handycraft materials.Three species of Pandanus, namely pandan wangi (P. amaryllifolius), cangkuang (P. furcatus) and pandan samak (P. tectorius) are known in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Pandan samak which has several different local names is the cultivated ones. This species is well known as handycraft from Tasikmalaya and had been exported to other countries. Incomes from the handycraft products is the second biggest source after agricultural sector.
