Abstract

Studies on the soil nutrient status of a degraded forest under traditional gold mining have been conducted in a forest area in Bojong Pari,Sukabumi,West Java by analyzing nutrient content of soil taken from degraded forest and also from the adjacent virgin forest as a control. Meanwhile, litter deposits from forest floor were collected to be compared. The result showed that the soil is belongs to clay type with the acidity ranged between (based on H2O 1:2,5) 4,72-4,83.Soil macro nutrient content from degraded forest showed N 0,041%; P 0,059 mg/100 g and K 0,222 ppm, this value are lower than that from virgin forest. The litter deposits ( dry weight) taken from degraded forest are 110,53 g/m lower than the virgin forest (230,42 gAn ).It means that traditional gold mining has changed the nutrient status of the Bojong Pan Forest area.

Abstract

The recent studies were carried out in June-July 1994,And aimed at investigating the distribution of the avifauna in eight main habitat types of Siberut Island. These habitat types were primary dipterocarp forests, primary mixed forests, secondary forests, swamp forests, mangroves, and coastal forests. It appeared that the habitat types tended to determine the bird communities living in the habitats, suggesting that the distribution of bird communities is related to the resources available within the habitats. The results indicate that the conservation measures of avifauna in this island would be better focused on the conservation of their habitats.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the forest types and their degradation at buffer zone of Semayang and Melintang lakes,East Kalimantan. The study was carried out in October 1994 by plot method.Within twenty five main plots, 108 tree species belongs to 75 genera and 38 families were recorded.Ouster analysis shows, the plots have high variation in species.By 50 % similarity index, there could be identified five communities (units)in peat swamp forest, eleven units in riparian forest and two units in kerangas forest.Structure, floristic composition and their degradation of communities at each forests are discussed.

Abstract

A study was conducted in determining the contents of alkaloid, tannin and nutritional Values from six browses fed to fattening cattle in Timor island. The samples Were gmelina (Gmelina arborea Roxb.),pates/lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala [Lamk.J De Wit),daun kupu-kupu (Bauhinia malabarica Roxb.), gala-galaAuri (Sesbania grandiflora [Li Pers.l gamal (Gliriddia sep/um [lick] Steud.).and kabesak (Acacialeucoohloea Willd.).Samples were collected during wet and dry seasons. Results showed that total number of alkaloid compounds varied from 14 to 30.There was an increase in concentration for alkaloid and tannin from Wet to dry season, however the concentrations were low (< 1%).The increase in the concentrations between seasons Were ranged from 20% to 32096.Nutritional values of the browse during wet season were considered high, however there is a need in evaluating the nutritional values of the browses during dry season as well.

Abstract

Caryota no Becc,(fish-tailpalm) is considered vulnerable palm, Its population is declining from the habitat by destructive exploitation but also to some extent by local people who remove the edible apex or 'cabbage 'as a vegetable and also obtain sago from the pith of the trunk,so kill the tree.A though its biological characteristics have not been fully studied, this species is also potentially for ornamental plant Thus conservation measures should be taken to improve the status of this threatened species. Tissue culture techniques may provide ways either to propagate or to conserve itin-vitro. Naturally Caryota no Becc.palm fruit after 20years and they can germinate more than 3 months after sowing with low germination value. In this experiment, the tissue culture response of this species are studied using the explant of embryo from (relatively) young fruit (juvenility fruit). The effect ofBA and 2,4D on the shoot growth, root growth and calluses was evaluated, while the evaluation of the effect ofactifated charcoal was discussed. The satisfactory results have not been achieved.

Abstract

Maccrocheles mendAriUs are the abundant mite species found in poultry litter in Bogor Municipality. However, their potential as predators ofhouseflies eggs and larvae are yet not known. An effort to study their life cycle has been done in the laboratory with an hou/iy observation. The eggs and larvae could not be found whereas the pmtonymphal stAge Were 18.67 hours oh Average And deutonymphal Were 29.04hours.The average size of protonymphAl'stage were 33.97 X 24.53 /Urn And deutonymphal were 38.44 x 32.15 jum. All of these progeny were not known whether from the fertilized or unfertilized femAles.

Abstract

A study was carried out to find out contaminated fungi on dried cassava. There were two experiments: I. isolation and identification of fungi on dried cassava and 2. inhibiting capacity of some kinds of some kinds of solution on growth of fungi. In experiment 2, there were three treatments: I.solution of garlic; 2.solution of salt and 3. vinegar. Results showed that dominated fungi on dried cassava were Aspergillus niger. Pen/ol/iumsp.and Rhizopussp. Between three treatments in experiment 2, the most effective solution to increase quality and storage capacity of dried cassava was solution of garlic.
