"Jurnal Energi dan Manufaktur" is a journal published by Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Udayana, Bali since 2006. During 2006-2011 the journal's name was "Jurnal Ilmiah Teknik Mesin CAKRAM" (Scientific journal in mechanical engineering, CAKRAM). "Jurnal Energi dan Manufaktur" is released biannually on April and October, respectively. We invite authors to submit papers from experimental research, review work, analytical-theoretical study, applied study, and simulation, in related to mechanical engineering (energy, material, manufacturing, design) to be published through "Jurnal Energi dan Manufaktur".

Abstract

Technology of investment casting has been successfully introduced and applied to the process in producing rings of silver jewelry in cooperative members of silver craftsmen association in Desa Celuk Sukawati Gianyar Bali. In this experiment, the casting equipments used were a principal modified casting machine to avoid a costly production. It was found that the application of investment casting was very prospective method. At once process of the application that took less than a working day, 17 pieces of ring could be produced, where 9 pieces (53%) were excellent and 8 pieces (47%) were invalid. This success is believed can be improved effectively either by controlling or optimizing the working parameters of each equipments in advance. Therefore, the application of the investment casting in producing silver jewelry will assist craftsmen not only to increase their products quality and quantity, but it also will prevent a high production cost compared to those of producing traditionally.

Abstract

The paper reported the experimental study on the influence of calcium carbonate content (CaCO3) in limestone to density of ceramic body. The density was measured in term of water absorption (Peresapan Air, PA) and pseudo porosity (Keporian Semu, KS). The Calcium carbonate content in limestone was determined by heating at temperature 1000oC and decomposing with acetate acid 25 %. The result indicated that both methods had no significantly different result. In addition, the two type limestones from different minefield had different CaCO3 contents. The limestone with higher CaCO3 content resulted in greater value of PA and KS of the ceramic body. The use of heated limestone (until 1000 oC) increased the density (decreased the PA and KS).

Abstract

During installation of an AC Split, the technician usually didn’t release the compressor insulation. They assumed that the compressor will have longer life time rather than without insulation. Actually, in this case the compressor worked hardly in insulated condition by glass wool. The overload signal then will immediately stop the electric current to the compressor. The research was aimed to investigate the AC performance if compressor in insulated condition and without insulation. The tested unit was AC 2 PK, water chiller type. The result showed, COP decreased 0.35; electrical consumption increased 18.7 Watt; and the refrigerating effect slightly decreased, respectively.

Abstract

Technology of polymers and composites progressively expand which had been found of various new composite types with excellence and also it’s excess. Currently, one of the composite materials was used in many industrial of automotive as vehicle body especially for components that needed light material with high strength and high corrosive resistance is Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP). This research investigated whether the addition of fiber layer can increase flexural strength of the composite, and how many the maximum fiber layer or maximum fiber fraction of weight. The experiment used unsaturated polyester Resin type of Yukalac 157 BQTN-EX as matrix, short glass fiber sheet with random orientation (chopped random mat) type of MAT 300 as reinforcement, and methyl etil keton peroxide (MEKPO) as hardener, respectively. The specimens were made by press hand lay-up and then formed and underwent the flexural testing according to standard of ASTM D 790 - 03. From the result and data analysis, it can be concluded that the weight fraction and fiber volume fraction increased with fiber layer. These resulted in the increase of flexural modulus and strength of GFRP. The specific strength and specific flexural modulus had relatively constant value, because the increase of flexural strength will be followed by increased its density. The number of maximum fiber layer in 1 mmcomposite in thickness was 3 layers (MAT 300), which approached the maximum fiber fraction of weight (Wf = 58.69%, 60% maximum).

Abstract

The process of making Bali Music Instrument (Gamelan Bali) included moulding, forging, adjustment of harmony (called sruti), and finally finishing process. In commonly application, there were some different media that used in the cooling process, however generally water was used as cooling media. The cooling media has an important effect on mechanical property of the materials. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of cooling media on mechanical properties of Gamelan Bali. The specimens are the casting product between copper and tin with compotition 80%Cu – 20%Sn. The treatment on specimen comprised machining process, heating to 500°C in an electrical furnace followed by 60 minute holding time. The cooling process was conducted with the cooling media of water, oil, and air, respectively. The crack toughness testing was then applied by using an ASTM E 399-90 standard test machine. The results showed that the cooling with water resulted in the highest crack toughness; on the contrary the air resulted in the lowest.

Abstract

Graphical User Interface (GUI) elements are treated as objects. They encapsulate data and method in a simple window. The GUI developed in this paper is to assisting designing and manufacturing an impeller pump. The software is developed in JAVA. Programming in JAVA takes advantages of its flexibilities. Results are presented in 2 D graphics and animation. Cubic Bezier curves algorithm is used to generate the impeller curve. The software is suitable for small industries and educational purposes.

Abstract

Weight reducing was one of the focuses in automotive industrial. The leaf spring especially in light vehicle (e.g. solar powered vehicle) can use the composite materials instead of the metal. The excellences of composite are light in weight, high corrosive resistance, high fatigue life, and high elasticity. In the present study, the composite was tested it’s tensile and fatigue strength. The material was composite with Woven Roving fiber and Yucalac 157 BQTN-EX as the matrix. Matrix to fiber ratio was 60:40, 68:32, and 76:24, respectively. The specimens were produced by press hand lay-up. The results showed that the fatigue life increased with fiber volume fraction as seen in the S-N curve. The observed failure modes were fiber debonding, matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breaking. The combination of these failure modes had significant impact to decreasing of the composite strength and stiffness.
