Abstract

The living monument in Bali (candi, pura/temple, hermitage cave, etc) has various functions. Since it was built, its function was dominated for religious purpose, especially to pay homage for god/goddess, ancestors, and other holy spirits. The praying purposed to ask for safety and peace, fertility, prosperity, welfare of the followers and the villagers. Besides that function, monument and its environment also utilized to enhance the historical and socio-cultural awareness and science development, and it is also useful for social integration, economic and ecological function. Recently those functions are still maintained and developed on line with socio-cultural and environmental changes. Related to socio-religious function with all of its rituals, later on cultural heritage become a prominent of tourism interest ( destination) in Bali. Besides that, the sacred value of the monument indirectly brings impact to environmental conservation. The conservation of natural environment then contributes to fulfill the monument needs for ritual and building construction. But recently, there is a new trend arising to communities related to cultural values which is showed by behavioral change on heritages conservation. The carelessness of environmental control and conservation, has caused degradation on quality of heritage and its environment. The degradation of ecological and magic-religious values, indirectly will affect the degradation of peace, prosperity and welfare of local communities , and then they are followed by lack of awareness and concern on cultural and natural heritages conservation. In order to cope with the problem, an holistic-integrated approach needs to be applied to manage living monument and its environment in Bali by appreciation on stability and proportional functions of socio-cultural, economic, and ecological aspect in frame of sustainable development.

Abstract

Demands towards the increase of high profits and the safety of the agricultural product have made the use of pesticide unavoidable. Regulation and government effort to prevent farmers from the dangerous use of pesticide has long been implemented but the fact is that until nowadays the use of the pesticide by farmers is far from safety standard. Both the effect of acute and chronic pesticide intoxication can create nervous system disorder and even death. Most users do not have enough knowledge about the danger of the pesticide and safety work procedure. In order to increase the quality of the farmers’ health and to prevent them from the effect of acute intoxication and long term use of pesticide effect, it is necessary to develop strategies to anticipate the effect of pesticide through Total Ergonomic Approach. This approach (TEA) includes SHIP approaches (Systemic, Holistic, Interdisciplinary and Participatory) and Appropriate Technology assessment in design.Based on the anticipating strategies towards the effect of pesticide intoxication on the farmers it is hoped that in the future the use of pesticide can fulfill safety standard and increase the life quality of farmers and community in general.

Abstract

Research dealing with effects of organic rubbish and waste formulation on the quality of compost fertilizer was conducted in Agriculture Experiment Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, Pegok, Denpasar, between June and October, 2007.The experiment utilized Randomized Complete Design, one factor with 10 formulation treatments and 3 replications. The treatments namely: A (100 % organic rubbish), B (75 % organic rubbish + 25 % pahitan plant), C (50 % organic rubbish + 50 % pahitan plant), D (75 % organic rubbish + 25 % waste of chicken cages), E (50 % organic rubbish + 50 % waste of chicken cages), F (75 % organic rubbish + 25 % waste of cow cattle), G ( 50 % organic rubbish + 50 % waste of cow cattle), H (75 % organic rubbish + 25 % waste of pig cattle), I (50 % organic rubbish + 50 % waste of pig cattle), and J (50 % organic rubbish + 12.5 % waste of cow cattle + 12.5 % waste of chicken cattle + 12.5 % waste of pig cattle + 12.5 % pahitan plant). The results showed that the treatment was highly significant to all parameters of compost at seven weeks incubation. The best formulation was E treatment, it was supported by increasing total nitrogen (1,61 %), available phosphorus (5,83 g/kg), Cation exchange capacity (CEC) (41,70 me/100 g), but decreasing C/N ratio (17,14), pH (7,07) and electric conductivity (very low).

Abstract

The research was undertaken on Pererenan beach in the Regency of Badung, Bali Province, between September and December, 2006. The study sites occur close to the downstream of Bausan creek, the location of which were part of ”Subak Kedungu” irrigation system (east of the creek) and ”Subak Munggu Tegal Lantang” irrigation system (west of the creek). Samples were taken on low tides periods of the intertidal zones of the beach. Samples were stratified randomly taken on three kinds of substrates: on sand and coral substrates on the west, sand substrates in the middle and hard sandstone on the east, each of which consist of five quadrates of 40 cm x 40 cm. Results of this research showed that on the site have been successfully identified 17 species of macrozoobenthic fauna. None of them were classified as protected species. The macrozoobenthic fauna on Parerenan beach had a medium level of index of diversity (IK = 2,598). This meant that, the beach ecosystem in Pererenan was in a stable condition with a medium level of diversity. From the benefit and problems related to their occurrence, it can be described that macrozoobenthic organisms on this study sites, some can be consumed. Besides, there were also some species which dangerous to human because they can cause bleeding, or dangerous hurt caused by sharp needles.
