Abstract

Abstract This study deals with the types of action middle found in Balinese. Data was gained through observation and interview method to some Balinese speakers. The data obtained from the speakers was completed by data produced by the writer as the native speaker of Balinese. Based on the analysis it was found that the action middles in Balinese can be classified into ten types, they are middle of grooming, middle of body change, non-translational middle, translational middle, indirect middle, middle of emotion, middle of cognition, spontaneous middle, middle of natural reciprocal, and middle of emotive utterance. Seen from their verb structures, verbs used in the action middles in Balinese can be classified into (1) intransitive verbs and transitive verbs. The intransitive verbs are classified into zero intransitive (ZO), intransitive {ma-} (IMA), intransitive {ma-/-an}, and nasal intransitive (NI). The intransitive {ma-} is divided into intransitive {ma-} with noun as its base, intransitive {ma-} with zero transitive verb as its base, and intransitive {ma-} with pre-category as its base. Furthermore, the transitive verb is divided into zero transitive (ZT) and nasal transitive marked by {N-}, {N-/-ang}, and {N-/-in}. The base of the transitive verbs are verb, noun, adjective, and pre-category.

Abstract

Politeness in expression according to Brown and Levinson (1978/1987); Leech (1983); and Ide (1989) is very important to notice in social life in order to avoid conflict which may occur in communication. Yet, politeness is applied differently in different culture because each utterance cannot be apart from its context (Leech, 1983).The goal of this study is to examine the politeness strategies in text that implemented in Complaint Letters which is published in “Harian Fajar” daily.Functional Analysis with focus on Field, Tenor, and Mode of Text is used to analyze the data. The analysis shows that power, distance and deference influence the text and strategy choices. The strategic choices indicate there is a distance in communication between interlocutors.

One of the effects is the appearance of Power and Solidarities in using pronominal personals, both the first, second or the third pronominal personals. This writing tries to review the usage and the rule of power and solidarity of the first, second and third pronominal personals. Well, pronominal personals aku, ku, engkau, and kalian are really no longer used anymore in this Reformation era. Even it is common taken place that the first singular personal are often used as kami. The second pronominal personal engkau and kamu are seldom used. On the other hand, the form of anda and kalian or saudara are more frequently used.
