Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the language maintenance occurring in the family domain in Belantih village, Kintamani, Bali. The analysis was limited to the language maintenance in the family domain in the form of speech and lexicons contained in Belantih Village. The data were elaborated on the analysis and presented qualitatively in the form of speech and vocabulary using the theories of the domains of language usage that proposed by Fishman (1968), the theory of language maintenance and language shifting proposed by Fishman (1972) and to determine the factors that cause the language maintenance that analyzed based on the theory strategy of language maintenance proposed by Holmes (1992). The result of the study showed that family domain is the smallest in the domains of social life, and the domain becomes an important indicator of language maintenance. BBA in the family domain in the Belantih village still usage until this time at the level of phonological which there is phoneme /a/ in the middle or at the end of the lexicon, and based on the lexical level, there are several lexicons which is the original lexicon of Belantih village. In maintenance the minority language in the middle of majority language takes some strategies such as phonological and lexical factors, the pattern of language use, demographic factors, and attitudes to the minority language, so in this case the society should have a positive attitude and a sense of belonging to the mother tongue or language minorities. This research is expected to contribute to further research related to the maintenance language as a mother tongue and not only in the domain of family but all of the domains in the society.

Abstract

The ability of writing coherence text is one of the important material in writing competence of university level. In reality, there are some lack of skill in writing text of university students. Therefore, this research is implemented to improve university level students’ coherence in text through the learning of coherence. The implementation of this classroom action research aims to answer the problems that have been formulated that are: (1) How are the scores of the students obtained in cycle 1? (2) How are the scores of the students obtained in the last cycle? (3) How is the argumentative text coherence by the students after the implementation of coherence learning? Therefore, the aim of this research is to: (1) explain the score results that the students obtained in cycle 1; (2) explain the score results that the students obtained in the last cycle; (3) explain the argumetntative text coherence by the students after the implementation of coherence learning. For collecting the data, the researcher use qualitative and quatitative approach. The data obtained from the students writing in form of qualitative. The results were analyzed based on the scoring rubric and assessed in the form of quantitative. Presentation of the results of the data analysis is presented descriptively. The results showed coherence learning is proven to increase the ability to write an argumentative text of students of STIBA Saraswati Denpasar. The mean score obtained by students in cycle 1 was 63,1does not vary much with the results of the acquisition of students’ scores on pre-observation stage is 60,4. This shows there is no difference between the scores of students at the stage of pre-observation compared in cycle 1, which have not implemented the coherence learning. In cycle 2, the acquisition of students’ scores have improved is 77,2, which is when the learning text coherence implemented. In cycle 3, it can be seen an increasing on the acquisition of students’ scores is 85,7. Based on the acquisition of students’ scores above it can be stated that, instructional text coherence can improve students’ scores acquisition in writing competence.

Abstract

In Japanese, the ending particles of sentences commonly used in conversations are 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona'. The matching of these words in Indonesian are 'ya', 'lho' and 'kan'. Using the methodology of language comparison, the theory of Information Territory, and using the example of sentences collected in Japanese comic that has been translated into Indonesian as a source of data, this study examines more deeply the use and function of ending particles on Japanese sentences 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona' with the translation of the words in Indonesian. The results shows that the use of ending particle on a sentence like 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona' in conversation is a must, while the use of "ya" "lho" "kan" in Indonesian is arbitrary.

Abstract

This study sets out to determine figurative language translated from the source language (Indonesian Language) and its translation on the target language (English Language) in terms of utterance and sentences. The data on this paper were obtained from reading a book entitled Lontar Tantri Carita (Kawi-Indonesia-Inggris) written by I Gusti Ayu Srinatih,et al. The method of collecting data used in this study was observation. Observation method included some techniques such as note taking and continued by arranging data into figurative language classifications. Data that was collected was classified based on the Figurative Language classifications by Larson (1998) and it were analyzed by Ethnography of Communication Theory (Hymes, 1975). The data was presented in qualitative descriptive. There were more than one figurative language found in the utterance of this book such as Simile, Idiom and Hyperbole. Each of those classifications was also supported by the description of Ethnography of Communication theory

Abstract

Kabhanti Watulea is oral literature of Watulea society in District Gu, Central Buton, Southeast Sulawesi Province. Kabhanti Watulea is an old literary works that are bound and has a distinctive shape. Kabhanti Watulea contains messages about social criticism comes as a form of dissatisfaction with the reality of inequality in society Watulea. The social criticism includes educational functions, as a form of learning that is valuable to society Watulea. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to find the facts, circumstances, and phenomena. The data source is a verbal text Kabhanti Watulea. Data obtained after through observation, interviews, and the recording process. Data is transcribed and transliterated by informants and researchers into Indonesian language, then, analyzed by using the theory of functions to find educational functions. These findings, not off to do with the approach of sociology of literature. Educational function found is a function of the mating polyandry education, education of the law of karma, education of the providence of God, and the education of religious teachings.

Abstract

The slang expression means coming to democratic atmosphere in language since the meaning embodied is not absolute. It depends upon who uses it, in which group the users belong to, and in what situation slang word occur. Having knowledge of slang, it means the user is bilingual, or even multilingual. The question emerged is how the user of slang employ slang in their daily communication. Their choice of certain slang replacing the standard may have a certain purposes. Therefore, it is really difficult to translate it in Indonesian. How to transfer the meaning of slang that contains senses about culture, habit, and identity of specific group of people is a complex undertaking. The form of English slang used in the novel "The Adventure of Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens is generally in the form of primary slang. There were sixteen primary slang words uttered by the character in the novel. However, there was only four secondary slang words found in the novel. So the primary slang more common used by the character in novel. There are three approaches that can be used to find the conceptual meaning of word in the process of translation. There are reference theory, componential analysis, and meaning postulate.

Abstract

This study aimed at1) describing the form, function and meaning of teachers’imperative verbal speech to instill character values on pre, main, and post activities in teaching and learning activities at reputable senior high school students in Malang and 2) describing a model of teachers' verbal imperative strategy in instilling character values at reputable senior high school students in Malang. This study wass classified as descriptive qualitative research. This study based on pragmatic theories especially imperative speech act and character educationtheory teachers’ imperative verbal speech of SMA 3 and SMA Negeri 5 Malang was the data of this study. The data of this study was gained through observation and recording techniques. The data was analyzed by using interactive models techniques by Mills and Huberman. The result of the study showed that: 1) the form of imperative speech used in pre, main, and post activities in teaching and learning activities was formal. Generally, this form enabled to give an instruction to students. Teachers’imperative verbal speech in instilling the character value was meant to give orders, errand, demand, insistence, calling out, allows, invitation, permits, prohibitions, and hope. 2) model of teachers’imperative verbal strategies in instilling the character value was direct imperative strategy and positive politeness strategy. Character values instilled by teacher to student whether on pre, main, and post activities in teaching and learning activities were discipline, honesty, tolerance, hard work, creative, love reading, recognize excellence, open, and friendlyvalues

Abstract

The ability to pronounce specific terms about the concept of front office is a crucial aspect which should be mastered by the students who learn about the field of hotel management. The learning process in the classroom still becomes the main key to reach the excellent achievement in speaking section. The main purpose of this research is to increase the pronunciation ability of the students, specifically for terms of front office concept, through the utilization of media for assisting the language learning process. The use of thematic cards method could be a proper choice to be applied in optimising the learning process which will increase the students’ comprehension towards the lessons delivered by the lecturer. This method is scientifically proven for enhancing the students’ pronunciation ability in this research, reaching the point of 68.97%. Besides pronunciation aspect, there are four other assessment aspects which have risen notably; the aspect of intonation aspect (reached the point of 67.59%), fluency (63.45%), expression (67.59%), and structure (68.28%). The result of this research proves that the classical learning process which is supported by the application of thematic cards could raise the ability of the students to pronounce the terms significantly via the implementation of the test in two cycles.

Abstract

This journal is aimed to analyse the ability of the eleventh students of SMA Budi Utama to pronounce the dialog before and after using audiolingual method and alsoanalizing the factors of mistake of pronounce the dialog. The data were collected by observing, recording the student pronunciations,anddoing direct interview to the English teachers related to the aims of the study.Quantitative method was used to analyse the numeric data based on the rubric and qualitative method was used to analyse the fonetic. The result of the analysis show that before using Audiolingual method students difficult to pronounce sounds[ð],[?], [ð], [?], [?], diphthong sounds[a?], [e?], [a?], and words ending by -ndand –ght. Students are tend to change the foreign sound with their own articulation such as sound [ð] changed by sound[d], sound[?] changed by sound [t], sound [?] changed by sound [s], sound [?] changed by sound [s]. One example word which showed the changes of mistaken percentage is [thought]from 100% decrease becomes 56% and more decrease in second cycles becomes 12%. Mistakes of pronounce of the students are caused by the influence of their mother tongue and their first language, the lack of teaching method, media, and supporting facilities from the school, students motivation, and their learn interest still less are caused by limited of the supporting facilities of the school
