Abstract

In Japanese, the ending particles of sentences commonly used in conversations are 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona'. The matching of these words in Indonesian are 'ya', 'lho' and 'kan'. Using the methodology of language comparison, the theory of Information Territory, and using the example of sentences collected in Japanese comic that has been translated into Indonesian as a source of data, this study examines more deeply the use and function of ending particles on Japanese sentences 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona' with the translation of the words in Indonesian. The results shows that the use of ending particle on a sentence like 'ne', 'yo', 'yone', and 'yona' in conversation is a must, while the use of "ya" "lho" "kan" in Indonesian is arbitrary.

Abstract

Many studies regarding the acquisition of te iru focus on the learner’s language output. There are very few researches that focus on textbooks as the input in language studies. There is a possibility that introducing grammatical items in textbooks tends to lead the learners to misuse te iru. It is necessary to clarify the grammatical items' characteristics in the basic level textbooks as a language input. Especially, in the study abroad, such as in Indonesia, non-textbook sources for Japanese input are limited. Therefore Indonesian Japanese learners mostly depend on textbooks. This research will discuss the introduction of te iru in the basic level textbooks from the input viewpoint. This research examines how te iru is introduced in “Situational Functional Japanese”. The data in this research include the main textbook and the grammatical explanation, from which te iru sentences are collected and classified. In order to identify the general tendency of te iru in textbooks, te ita, te inai and subordinate sentences are also included as data. Each textbook recognizes that five usages are introduced in the explanation of SFJ, but only two usages are written in explaining the usage of te iru. Their usage is resultative and progressive. And, te inai and te ita are also introduced in SFJ. Moreover, if we look at the distribution of the example sentences of te iru in SFJ the example sentences can still be found, some of which show an increase in subsequent chapters.

Abstract

In Japanese, four conjugate particles are usually used to form conditional sentence patterns, namely “to”, “tara”, “reba” and “nara”. Based on the use of their modality and information territory, they have different uses and functions. Data analysis of Japanese newspaper sentences using qualitative method showed that Japanese conditional sentences can be classified into two types. The first type is Repeated Factual Conditional Sentence that uses the conjugate particle “to”. This sentence is used when the speaker and listener are considered to know the contents of the information in it, thus expressing a recurring event or habit. The modality that is widely used is the epistemic modality. The second type is Hypotheses or Assumptions Conditional Sentences that use the conjugate particles of “tara”, “reba”, and “nara”. This conditional sentence is used when the contents of the information is the speaker’s desire and only exists in the territory of the speaker. Therefore, its functions is to show a desire, request, suggestion, order, and prohibition, all of which are hypotheses or assumptions of the speaker. The modality used is the intentional modality, such as the modality of desires, requests, suggestions, commands, prohibitions, and so on.
