Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of non-observance Grice conversational maxims utilized by characters in Friends TV Show which involved the flouting maxim, violating maxim, infringing maxim, suspending maxim and opting out maxim. The results of the study showed that that almost all non-observance Grice conversational maxims were utilized in generating verbal humours in which opting out Grice conversational maxim was hardly found to create verbal humour. All types of verbal humours were successfully performed by the characters through flouting conversational maxim in which flouting manner and relation maxims concealed all types of verbal humours due to the irrelevant and ambiguous information delivered by the characters. In addition, the ways the characters being intentionally misleading without any implicature produced had generated humour for the audiences. Furthermore, literalness verbal humour was the most generated humour performed by the characters in infringing the maxims due to characters’ foolishness and lack of imagination. Moreover, suspending Grice conversational maxim was only found in suspended messages and voice call which was funny at the right setting in which there was no implicature produced and expectation to fulfil the maxim. However, there was opting out Grice conversational maxim discovered in this study due to the involvement of third party. For the further study, it is insinuated that the study of verbal humours could be investigated along with the non-verbal communication in order to see the connectivity among the verbal humour and non-verbal communication within conversation.

Abstract

The monotonous teaching techniques lead to boredom and lack of results in teaching basic grammar. Meanwhile, technology has rapidly developed. Furthermore, different personalities, extrovert and introvert, might affect the specific result in learning a language. Therefore, this study aimed to report the effectiveness of Grammarly and Web-based language learning (WBLL) techniques in teaching basic grammar to extrovert and introvert students. It employed quantitative research with a factorial design study. The object was the first grade of Nursing and Midwifery students of Ministry of Health Polytechnic Semarang in the Academic Year of 2020/2021. It involved two experimental groups. The students in Class A were treated using Grammarly technique, and students in Class B were treated using WBLL technique. The data collection used an EPI questionnaire and pre-test and post-test. At the same time, the data analysis employed ANOVA. The result showed that Grammarly technique was more effective in teaching basic grammar to extrovert students, and WBLL technique more effective in teaching basic grammar to introvert students. The result also showed a significant value of 0.804 > 0.05. It proved that there was no significant interaction of Grammarly, Web-based language learning, and the students’ personalities in teaching basic grammar.

Abstract

A textbook is a crucial part of English language teach since it provides a whole package of materials as well as the activities and assignments. One of the main language materials presented by the textbook is reading texts. These reading texts consist of a lot of genres, one of which is recount text. As a model text used by the teachers and students, it needs to be stylistically well-written and effectively organized. In order to achieve these features, the cohesion and coherence are essential. This study examines the realization of cohesion to achieve coherence in two English textbooks for grade VIII of junior high school students. In conducting this study, qualitative approach with discourse analysis, specifically text analysis, was adopted. Eight recount texts presented in the two textbooks are analyzed using cohesion concept by Halliday and Hasan (2014) and coherence concept by Thornbury (2005). There are three main findings of this study. First, in terms of grammatical cohesion, reference and conjunction dominated the findings; whilst lexical cohesion findings are dominated by collocation. Second, the texts are mostly organized by using the reiteration pattern. Third, the texts share more similarities than differences in regard with the result of the cohesion and coherence analysis. At last, the similarities and differences provide two effects to the text; indicating the texture of the text and representing the text quality. Keywords: textbook, recount text, cohesion, coherence.

This study employed a descriptive qualitative method in the form of pragmatic analysis to examine four episodes from the utterances between the host and his guest stars’ interactions. The classifications of utterances were analyzed and classified based on (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). The findings of this study show that the host and his guest stars employ all pos-politeness and neg-politeness maxims during their interactions. Both the host and his guest stars employed tact (28.63%), opinion reticence (17.34%), agreement (14.54%), generosity (14.11%), approbation (9.27%), sympathy (4.03%), obligation S to O (4.03%), modesty (4.03%), feeling reticence (2.42%), and obligation O to S 4 utterances (2%).

Abstract

Textbooks play an important role in teaching and learning activities. The revisions to the curriculum still kept character education at their center, even strengthening its implementation. Indonesia's current president, Mr. Jokowi, has a plan called "mental revolution," which is contained in the 2013 curriculum. This research aims at revealing several social character values that are representing a mental revolution: (1) honesty, (2) discipline, (3) responsibility, (4) care value, (5) politeness value, (6) responsiveness value, and (7) proactive value. The research method is content analysis with a qualitative, descriptive approach. The subject was the English textbook for 10th graders, written by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017. The research shows that there were seven social character values in Buku Bahasa Inggris for 10th graders, written by the ministry of education and culture, dominated by the responsibility value (28.1%) and proactive value (26.3%). Discipline and responsiveness, on the other hand, are the least common social character values, appearing with frequency of 2.8% and 0.4%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that the textbook isn’t good enough to be used in teaching and learning activities, and it also doesn’t match Mr. Jokowi’s plan.

Abstract

Cohesive devices have a significant role to play in producing text writing. Because cohesive devices do not just show one unity in a text but also express the sustainability of a sentence that is between one sentence and a sentence that other and even between one paragraph with another paragraph in the text. The generic structure function is making the sentences in a text neater and more structured. This research aimed to evaluate the use of cohesive devices and generic structure in students’ recount text at the English Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This study adopted the theory of Hasan & Halliday (1976). The result shows that the most contribution of cohesive devices in students’ recount texts is provided by conjunction especially the use of causal conjunction. Then, it followed by the use of reference, substitution, and ellipsis. It indicated that most of the students used the conjunctions in their recount texts to realize the relationship of how the subsequent sentence or clause should be linked to the following sentence. Then, based on the evaluation of the use of generic structures in students’ recount texts, it is can be concluded that all of the thirty recount texts of UINAM fifth-semester used the orientation, events, and re-orientation in their recount texts. Further, both cohesive devices and generic structures are related to each other to create a good text. The use of cohesive devices and generic structures in students’ recount texts affects the quality of texts that are produced by the students. It means that the use of cohesive devices and generic structures is very important in developing a good text.

Analyzing interpersonal meaning in speech is very useful to see how the speakers interact with the listeners. This research analyzed three speeches of Donald Trump’s 2020 speeches. It analyzed mood, modality, mood and modality relation, and the conceptual application of the findings toward English Language Teaching. It used the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The result shows that Donald Trump mostly used a declarative mood to give American information as much as possible. Donald Trump mostly used the median degree of Inclination because his ability to protect the American people was not strong enough at the time because he and his people had not provided vaccines. In the mood and modality relationship, it was expressed the seriousness of the situation and prevention act, commitment, empathy, and encouragement. Further, the conceptual application of the findings toward English Language Teaching concluded that mood and modality are very useful in teaching writing because they can give them understanding and knowledge about grammatical features of Mood and modality.
