Abstract

Facial skin health results from a complex interaction between intrinsic biological processes and extrinsic environmental exposures, extending beyond the effects of topical skincare alone. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from original studies published between 2015 and 2025, retrieved from PubMed and Google Scholar using targeted search terms related to internal factors such as hydration status, hormonal regulation, and genetic variation, as well as external influences including ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, and light absorption. Eligible studies were full-text original articles in English or Indonesian that examined skin-active ingredients or physiological mechanisms affecting facial skin. The literature consistently identifies hydration as a fundamental determinant of skin elasticity, smoothness, and luminosity, mediated through corneocyte organization, lipid barrier integrity, and aquaporin-3–regulated water transport. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen, play a critical role in maintaining dermal quality by stimulating collagen synthesis, enhancing skin thickness, and reducing oxidative damage. Genetic variability further contributes to individual differences in skin characteristics by influencing collagen density, antioxidant defense systems, pigmentation pathways, and inflammatory responses. External stressors significantly modulate these intrinsic processes, with ultraviolet radiation and air pollution accelerating skin aging through oxidative stress, collagen degradation, barrier disruption, and pigmentary alterations. In addition, light absorption and reflection at the skin surface, affected by sebum composition and optical properties of the stratum corneum, influence perceived skin tone and radiance. Collectively, the evidence underscores the importance of understanding how intrinsic and extrinsic factors interact to shape facial skin health. A holistic, evidence-based approach that integrates topical treatments with internal health optimization, hormonal balance, lifestyle modification, and personalized care strategies is essential for achieving and maintaining optimal facial skin condition.

Abstract

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has resulted in a major global public health crisis. In the absence of a universally approved specific antiviral therapy, several existing antiviral agents have been repurposed, including favipiravir. Favipiravir is a purine nucleoside analog that inhibits RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), an essential enzyme for viral RNA replication. This review aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of favipiravir therapy in patients with COVID-19. A narrative literature review was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar, including national and international peer-reviewed journals published between 2019 and 2021. Clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies assessing favipiravir in COVID-19 patients were included, while articles lacking accessible full texts or reliable data were excluded. The reviewed studies indicate that favipiravir therapy is associated with improved clinical outcomes, including reduced duration of fever and cough and accelerated viral clearance within 7–14 days of hospitalization, particularly in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. However, considerable variability in outcomes was observed due to differences in study design, sample size, dosing regimens, comparator therapies, and treatment duration. Overall, favipiravir demonstrates potential as an antiviral therapy for COVID-19; nevertheless, large-scale, well-designed randomized controlled trials are required to definitively confirm its efficacy and safety across different patient populations.

Abstract

Enhancing the dissolution of poorly water-soluble drugs remains a major challenge in drug development. Binary solid dispersions (BSDs), composed of a drug and a hydrophilic polymer, have been employed to improve solubility primarily through amorphization. However, many BSD systems suffer from limited wettability and suboptimal dispersion, which reduce their effectiveness in promoting rapid and consistent drug release. Ternary solid dispersions (TSDs) introduce a functional third component, such as an additional polymer, surfactant, co-former, or other excipient, to overcome these limitations and further enhance dissolution performance. This review provides a concise summary of current advancements in TSD systems and their underlying mechanisms for improving drug dissolution. Relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed using the keywords "ternary solid dispersion" and "dissolution." Critical formulation strategies, excipient combinations, and manufacturing techniques were summarized to elucidate how TSDs improve dissolution by stabilizing the amorphous state, inhibiting nucleation and crystal growth, enhancing wettability, and preventing particle agglomeration. The selected preparation method was determined to significantly affect dissolution behavior. The compiled evidence supports TSD systems as a versatile and efficient strategy for improving the dissolution characteristics of poorly water-soluble drugs, offering substantial potential for advancing oral drug delivery.

Abstract

Proper skin hydration is essential for maintaining healthy skin and protecting it from environmental damage. A thorough understanding of the skin’s structure can help researchers identify its layers and components, leading to the development of effective skin hydration formulations. Emulsions are commonly used because they combine water and oil phases, along with ingredients that preserve hydration and enhance chemical penetration through the stratum corneum. Consequently, emulsions are prevalent in skincare and cosmetic products, which are often supplemented with humectants, occlusive agents, and emollients to enhance their efficacy. This study explores the mechanisms through which emulsions support skin hydration, focusing on the roles of water and oil in moisturizing and serving as a skin barrier, as well as the functions of humectants, occlusive agents, and emollients. In conclusion, the stratum corneum is critical for maintaining skin hydration by regulating the water and oil content within its cells and the lipid-rich intercellular spaces. Humectants, occlusive agents, and emollients each enhance hydration through unique mechanisms. We hope this article will assist researchers in developing highly effective, hydrating skincare and cosmetic products.
