Abstract

Abstract

Studies of women in the military campaigns of the Prophet Muhammad have mostly concentrated on legal rulings or biographical narratives, so the sociological meaning stored in the hadith corpus has rarely been examined. This study asks how authentic hadiths portray women’s participation in warfare as a reflection of the social organization of the early Muslim community. Two principal narrations were selected, namely the report of Nusaybah bint Kaʿb (Umm ʿAmmārah) defending the Prophet at the Battle of Uhud and the report of ʿĀʼishah and Umm Sulaym carrying water for the troops in the same battle. The study joins classical hadith methodology, consisting of takhrīj al-ḥadīth, criticism of the isnād, and criticism of the matn, with the Social Construction of Reality framework of Berger and Luckmann through qualitative document-based and internet-based research. The findings show that women’s participation took the form of humanitarian services such as water distribution, nursing, casualty evacuation, and logistics, and, in an emergency, direct defense of the Prophet. These practices arose as responses to wartime needs (externalization), gained religious legitimacy through Prophetic approval and canonical preservation (objectivation), and were inherited by later generations through hadith transmission (internalization). The article contributes to the development of Hadith Sociology by connecting classical hadith criticism with contemporary sociological theory.
