Abstract

This article is a review of the book titled "Intellectuals In The Modern Islamic World: Transmission, Transformation, Communication", edited by Stephane A. Dudoignon, Komatsu Hisao, and Kosugi Yasushi. The book presents an in-depth exploration of the history and typology of intellectuals in the Islamic world during the modern and contemporary periods, from the late 19th century to the present day. The book consists of two main parts. The first part focuses on the journal al-Manar, which was published between 1898 and 1935 and read by a diverse audience across the Islamic world. It inspired the imagination and arguments of local intellectuals in the first half of the twentieth century. The second part focuses on the formation, transmission, and transformation of learning and authority, from the Middle East to Central and South Asia, throughout the twentieth century. Thus, the book makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of Islamic thought and the role of intellectuals in responding to the challenges of modernity

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of Arabic for Economics learning based on George R. Terry’s perspective, encompassing the functions of planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling (POAC) in the Islamic Economics Study Program at IAIN Kendari. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants consisted of three individuals, namely one lecturer responsible for the Arabic for Economics course and two students with different levels of Arabic proficiency. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation, including the Semester Learning Plan (RPS), instructional materials, learning media, and assessment documents. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that the four POAC functions were implemented in an integrated manner. Planning was realized through the preparation of the RPS and the selection of materials based on students’ academic needs, particularly terminology related to Islamic banking, murābaḥah, muḍārabah, zakat, and Islamic marketing. Organizing was implemented through heterogeneous grouping based on students’ Arabic proficiency, task distribution, and instructional media management. Actuating was carried out through active, communicative, and contextual learning that integrated Arabic language skills with Islamic economics content. The most notable finding is that integrating POAC with the Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP) approach enabled instructional planning to be directly translated into communicative activities based on Islamic economics terminology while accommodating differences in students’ Arabic proficiency through collaborative learning. Meanwhile, controlling was implemented through continuous monitoring, authentic assessment, feedback, and follow-up actions. Thus, POAC-based management supports contextual, collaborative, and academically oriented Arabic for Economics learning.
