Abstract

Yogyakarta’s Kotabaru area is one of rich cultural heritage, with a protected cultural status that means it must be preserved. Presently, Kotabaru faces the threat of destruction as a consequence of its developing business and services sectors. The changing of building functions, together with new developments, is ever-increasing with each year. This research sought to study what is occurring between the preservation of the Kotabaru area and the development of its economic sector, as well as how efforts can be made to solve the problems of the threat of destruction to protected cultural sites within the area, using the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach. The findings revealed that there are competing interests in the Kotabaru area, between preservation and economic development, which contribute to the emergence of a threat to the preservation of protected cultural sites. To solve this problem, the HUL approach should be used and, in particular, the approach contained in the UNESCO recommendation on managing cultural heritage. With these findings, it is hoped that they will be able to serve as a reference concept for the solving of the issues that are occurring in the Kotabaru area, from a perspective of cultural heritage management.

Abstract

Satisfaction of tourists is the key success for tourism destination sustainability because it is a reason for tourists to return to the destination. This research wanted to see the anomaly at Sunan Muria Tomb, Kudus, Central Java related to the satisfaction of tourists on the limited accessibility which is one of the four components that must be owned by a tourist destination according to Cooper, et.al. (1993), in addition to attractions, amenitas, and ancillary service. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and phenomenological approach. Methods of data collection with field observation, in-depth interviews and literature study. The results of this study indicate that access to the tomb of Sunan Muria, both with the stairs and motorcycle taxi is still far from feasible. The stairs are not flat because it is made of stone times, quite steep and there is no cover on so if the rain down the stairs become muddy and slippery. Although there is motorcycle taxi service, but the level of security (riding safety) is also low. This destination for tourists still has interesting attractions as pilgrimage destination with adequate amenitas (food stalls and lodgings) and ancelery service (from the YM2SM or Sunan Muria foundation and the Tourism Office of Kudus District Government), although accessibility is very problematic. All the visitors complained about this, but that did not dampen interest for a return visit. This is an anomaly in the Sunan Muria pilgrimage destination.

Abstract

The Philosophical Axis of Yogyakarta has been designated as a world heritage by UNESCO. The nomination process has been criticized for neglecting community engagement. There is an assumption that the community will not be ready to play an active role in preserving the significant values of the Philosophical Axis. In fact, the community participation is the key to the conservation success. This paper presents the results of a study on the perception and level of readiness of the community around the Philosophical Axis area to take active participation in managing this world heritage. The study was conducted using the Cultural Heritage Management approach. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews, FGDs, and observations involving a number of resource persons living within the Sumbu Filosofi area. The results demonstrate that the community tend to understand the meaning of the Philosophical Axis and efforts to preserve it, although there are still some who do not understand it well. This shows that the dissemination of the significance values of the Philosophical Axis and its management efforts has not been effective. From the level of readiness, the community in the Philosophical Axis Area has only reached the initiation level. The community knows the positive impact of the establishment of the Philosophical Axis that can improve the economy and welfare of the community. However, they are not truly ready to be involved in its preservation and management. The government must optimize the policies and management programs of the Philosophical Axis in order to create synergy between the government and the community.

The data were analyzed with a philoarchaeological approach. The results of this study show that ancient catastrophe consists of earthquakes, tsunamis, mountain eruptions, and floods. Abstract
