Abstract

This study aims to analyze effective strategies to overcome students' difficulties in answering Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions in Indonesian language learning. The main problem lies in students’ low ability in critical, analytical, and creative thinking when processing text-based information. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects were junior high school students who experienced difficulties in answering HOTS questions. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that students' difficulties are caused by a lack of conceptual understanding, limited exposure to HOTS-based questions, and learning methods that still emphasize memorization. Effective strategies to address these issues include implementing problem-based learning, utilizing interactive learning media, and providing varied and contextual HOTS exercises. In addition, the teacher’s role in providing scaffolding and feedback is crucial in improving students' higher-order thinking skills. The implementation of appropriate strategies can significantly enhance students' ability to answer HOTS questions in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

The use of digital technology in the 21st-century education era demands innovative learning strategies that are able to foster student creativity and engagement. Canva for Education is a cloud-based graphic design platform that provides special features for educational purposes, offering great potential to be implemented in elementary school learning, especially in lower grades (grades 1–3). This research aims to explore the utilization of Canva for Education features in creating interactive learning in lower-grade elementary school classrooms. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were grade 2 and grade 3 students and teachers at SDN 111/I Muara Bulian. The findings reveal that Canva for Education features—including interactive presentation templates, collaborative whiteboard, animation elements, educational infographics, and assignment features—successfully created an interactive, creative, and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Students showed high enthusiasm, increased motivation to learn, and improved digital literacy skills. Teachers also benefited from time efficiency in preparing visually appealing learning materials. This study confirms that Canva for Education is an effective, practical, and inclusive digital learning medium suitable for lower-grade elementary school environments and aligned with 21st-century education demands.
