Abstract

Background: Mothers play a primary role in their children’s oral health behavior and outcomes. Broader research is needed to evaluate the correlation between maternal caries and children's caries to help determine suitable education. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the correlation between maternal caries and their children’s caries aged 4-7 years. Methods: This study uses a correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 305 mothers and their children were involved as respondents from seven kindergartens in Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra. The caries evaluation was measured using the DMFT score for the mother and the deft score for the children. The dental caries status was assessed using clinical oral examination form to calculate the DMFT index in mothers and deft in children as numerical variables presented as mean and standard deviation (SD). The correlation analysis test was performed to prove the strength of correlation. Results: The mean maternal DMF index was 11.526 ± 6.178, while the mean children deft index was 7.345 ± 4.609. Although the maternal caries experience was higher, the correlation between maternal and child caries scores was very weak and not statistically significant (r = 0.105; p = 0.112). The findings suggest that maternal caries alone may not as strong predictor of caries in children. Conclusion: The correlation between maternal caries and children’s caries is very weak and poses an indirect influence on caries in children. Strengthening maternal oral health education and promoting preventive dental care are essential strategies for improving children’s oral health outcomes.

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common disease experienced by Indonesian people, especially in 12-year-olds who already have completely permanent teeth, and 12-year-old children are designated as the global monitoring age for caries. Purpose of the study to find out the description of dental caries experience in grade VII students at SMPN 1 Nagari Koto Tangah, Tilatang Kamang District, Agam Regency. A type of quantitative research with a descriptive design. The research population is all grade VII students of SMPN 1 Tilatang Kamang totaling 122 people. The sampling technique is a saturated sample, that is, the entire population is used as a sample. Data collection through direct examination. The data analysis used univariate analysis. The results of the study obtained a DMF-T index based on age, namely the bad criteria at the age of 13 years of 53%, while the DMF-T index with good criteria was also at the age of 12 years of 70%. Based on gender, the DMF-T index is 57% bad criteria for females, while the DMF-T index is good criteria for males at 70%. The average DMF-T index of 122 respondents in class VII at SMPN 1 Tilatang Kamang was 1.56 with poor criteria. The conclusion of this study is that grade VII students of SMPN 1 Tilatang Kamang have an average DMF-T index of 1.56 with poor criteria. Respondents were advised to reduce the habit of consuming sweet and sticky foods, and to apply the habit of gargling after consuming sweet and sticky foods. Filling cavities.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to facilitate the early detection of dental caries and to improve knowledge and skills in maintaining oral health among preschool children. The implementation method applied promotive, preventive, and early detection approaches through audiovisual-based oral health education, demonstrations of proper tooth-brushing techniques using phantom models, supervised group tooth-brushing practice, and dental examinations using the def-t index. The activity involved 242 preschool children in Banuhampu District, Agam Regency. The results showed that 52.89% of children were in the good category (def-t ≤2), while 47.11% were in the poor category (def-t >2), with a mean def-t index of 2.55, indicating a relatively high level of caries experience. The program also produced baseline data on children’s oral health status and successfully implemented educational and practical activities. In conclusion, the integration of early detection, education, and practical training effectively provides an overview of children’s oral health and serves as a foundation for sustainable promotive and preventive efforts
