Abstract

Household waste problems continue to increase and require community-based integrated management. This community service activity aimed to improve public awareness and knowledge regarding zero waste-based waste management and to introduce a simple technological innovation in the form of a rocket stove. The activity was conducted on January 24, 2026, in Cibodas Village, Tanara District, Serang Regency, involving 38 community members and 20 university students. The methods used included counseling, interactive discussions, and demonstrations. The results showed an increase in community understanding of waste sorting and utilization, as well as strong interest in the rocket stove as an alternative solution for reducing dry waste and producing useful residues. This program is expected to support the realization of a clean, healthy, and sustainable village. Keywords: community participation; waste management; rocket stove; zero waste

Abstract

The objective of this research was to assess students’ vocabulary mastery using the Simpler application. The research employed a quasi-experimental design, with cluster random sampling. The study selected two classes: the control class (N=30) and the experimental class (N=32) at the seventh grade of a junior high school in Serang regency. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and analyzed using the t-test with the SPSS v25 program. While the control class had an improvement from 51.60 to 60.93, the experimental class saw a rise from 55.50 to 77.87. There was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.00) between the two groups in the post-test results. The results showed that the Simpler application has significantly improve the students’ vocabulary mastery and simple sentence production. This study sheds light on the potential of media in enhancing English language acquisition, specifically highlighting the beneficial effects of the Simpler application on vocabulary instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates internal and external factors influencing motivation and demotivation in English language learning among eighth-grade students at a public junior high school in Banten province, Indonesia. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the research integrated questionnaires (N=32), semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS for descriptive statistics and independent samples ttests, while interview and observation data underwent thematic analysis. The findings reveal that instrumental motivation, particularly desires to secure future employment (M=3.96) and achieve academic success (M=3.72), dominates students' reasons for learning English, while integrative motivations occupy secondary positions. Conversely, lack of self-confidence emerged as the most prominent demotivating factor (M=3.18), manifesting through fear of making mistakes and pronunciation anxiety. External factors such as classroom environment contribute to demotivation but to a lesser extent than internal psychological barriers. Comparative analysis revealed that highachieving students demonstrated balanced motivation and consistent engagement despite confidence issues, while low-achieving students exhibited narrower motivational orientations and greater vulnerability to external demotivators. A paradoxical pattern emerged: students' motivation is predominantly driven by external instrumental goals, yet their demotivation stems primarily from internal psychological barriers. These findings extend Gardner's socio-educational model and Sakai and Kikuchi's demotivation framework by demonstrating how achievement levels moderate motivational constructs in Indonesian junior high school contexts, emphasizing the need for pedagogical interventions addressing both instructional content and students' affective dimensions, particularly self-confidence building.
