Abstract

The increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and low levels of physical activity remain major challenges in health promotion and disease prevention efforts. Limited public understanding regarding the relationship between exercise and body metabolism also contributes to low awareness in maintaining a healthy lifestyle consistently. This community service program aimed to improve sports health literacy and basic biochemical understanding through health education among athlete communities at the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK) Universitas Negeri Makassar. The program applied a community-based participatory health education approach integrating interactive health coaching, group discussions, simple simulations, light physical activity practices, and reflective participation methods. A total of 36 athletes participated in the activity. Evaluation was conducted without using pre-test and post-test methods, but through reflective participatory evaluation, participant engagement observation, and direct feedback sessions. The results showed increased participant understanding regarding the importance of physical activity, energy metabolism, hydration, body recovery, and the relationship between exercise and biochemical processes in the body. Participants also demonstrated active engagement and enthusiasm throughout the program. This activity positively contributed to improving healthy lifestyle awareness and participants’ commitment to sustainable physical activity. Therefore, participatory sports health education can serve as an effective strategy to support health promotion and improve quality of life, particularly among young athlete communities.

Abstract

The assistance program on balanced pre-competition meal planning for athletes of Sahabat Basketball Club was conducted to improve their understanding and skills in preparing nutritional intake suitable for physical demands prior to competition. The program involved 25 adolescent basketball athletes and was implemented through three core approaches: education, mentoring, and socialization. Evaluation was carried out using pre- and post-test assessments to measure changes in knowledge and practical skills related to food selection, nutrient composition, and pre-match meal timing strategies. Results showed a significant improvement in post-test scores compared to pre-test results, with an average increase of approximately 30 points, indicating enhanced understanding and behavioral changes toward more structured nutritional practices. This program demonstrates that educational interventions combined with direct mentoring can provide positive and sustainable impacts on athletes’ readiness for competition. Therefore, similar initiatives are recommended to be continued as an integral part of athlete development programs.

Abstract

Cholesterol is an important metabolic indicator that can influence physical fitness, particularly muscular endurance. Regular physical activity in fitness centers plays a significant role in maintaining cholesterol levels and enhancing muscle performance. This study aimed to describe the total cholesterol level and muscular endurance among women aged 20–40 years who actively exercise at a fitness center. This research employed a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach involving 30 purposively selected participants. Data were collected through total cholesterol measurements using a digital cholesterol test meter and muscular endurance assessments using a one-minute sit-up test. The results showed that the mean total cholesterol level was 179.63 ± 18.75 mg/dL, while the mean muscular endurance score was 43.33 ± 5.86 sit-ups per minute. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong negative relationship between total cholesterol and muscular endurance (r = −0.979; p < 0.001). These findings indicate that higher total cholesterol levels are associated with lower muscular endurance. The study emphasizes the importance of regular physical activity in maintaining healthy lipid profiles and improving overall physical fitness among women of productive age.
