Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social transformation of Arab society during the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW from the perspective of Islamic Cultural History. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach by examining relevant literature. The findings show that pre-Islamic Arab society was dominated by a tribal-based social system with high levels of social inequality. Social transformation began in the Meccan period through the message of monotheism, which changed the value system of society, and continued in the Medinan period through the establishment of an organized society based on brotherhood, justice, and equality. This transformation not only affected social and political aspects but also became the foundation for the development of Islamic civilization. Thus, the social transformation during the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW demonstrates Islam’s role as a multidimensional force of social change.   Keywords: Social Transformation, Prophet Muhammad SAW, Arab Society, Islamic Cultural History

Abstract

The Islamic intellectual tradition during the Abbasid Dynasty constituted one of the most significant foundations for the development of Islamic civilization and the advancement of global knowledge. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the Islamic intellectual tradition during the Abbasid period, the factors that supported its development, and its relevance to the advancement of contemporary Islamic education. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive qualitative approach through the analysis of various relevant scholarly sources. The findings reveal that the Abbasid intellectual tradition was characterized by strong state support for the advancement of knowledge, openness to diverse global intellectual traditions, the development of educational institutions and centers of learning such as Bayt al-Hikmah, the emergence of a robust academic culture, and the integration of knowledge with ethical and moral values (adab). The growth of this intellectual tradition was supported by political stability, economic prosperity, translation movements of foreign works, and the cosmopolitan nature of society. The Abbasid intellectual tradition remains highly relevant to contemporary Islamic education, particularly in addressing the dichotomy between religious and secular sciences, enhancing literacy and research culture, strengthening academic integrity, and promoting education oriented toward both character formation and scientific mastery. Therefore, the values cultivated during the Abbasid era can serve as a foundation for developing an integrative, innovative, and adaptive Islamic educational system that responds to technological advancements while maintaining Islamic principles.   Keywords: Islamic Intellectual Tradition, Abbasid Dynasty, Contemporary Islamic Education

Abstract

An adaptive and peaceful socio-cultural approach characterizes the Islamization process in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago. Among various historical theories, the Gujarat Theory offers a robust sociological explanation regarding the moderate character of early Islam in coastal regions. This study aims to analyze the cultural and religious assimilation and trace the remaining manifestations of the Gujarat Theory in shaping comparative religious traditions across the maritime coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia. The research method employed is a literature study (library research) with a qualitative-comparative approach. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis and source triangulation of historical literature. The study reveals three main findings. First, the spread of Islam was driven by the flexible Sufi practices of Gujarati merchants, which made it easily accepted by local communities. Second, coastal areas acted as cosmopolitan gateways that transmitted Islamic values through trade and marriage, establishing the Sultanates of Samudera Pasai and Malacca. Third, this assimilation is materially evidenced by the identical architecture of ancient gravestones from Cambay found in Aceh and Malaysia, and non-materially by the daily religious rituals of coastal communities. This study concludes that coastal Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia shares a common, inclusive, and moderate spiritual and cultural genealogical root.   Keywords: Coastal Communities, Cultural Assimilation, Gujarat Theory, Indonesia-Malaysia, Maritime Sufism
