Abstract

Ankle injury is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries among physically active university students, and one of its most detrimental functional consequences is a reduction in balance capacity due to impairment of the proprioceptive system. This study aimed to analyze the effect of proprioceptive training on improving balance among students of the Faculty of Sports Science, State University of Medan (FIKK Unimed) who had experienced mild ankle injuries. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed, involving 20 students who participated in an intervention program conducted twice per week for 8 weeks. Balance was assessed using a standardized functional balance test battery with scores ranging from 0 to 100. The results showed an increase in the mean balance score from 60.45 (pretest) to 68.70 (posttest), representing an average improvement of 8.25 points. A paired-samples t-test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = 10.217, p = 0.000), with a Cohen’s d effect size of 2.28, indicating a large effect. These findings consistently demonstrate that structured proprioceptive training can significantly restore balance deficits following mild ankle injury and provide clinically meaningful improvements.

Abstract

Stretching is a critical yet often overlooked component in the training programs of competitive swimmers. This study aimed to develop a structured, needs-based stretching program for swimming athletes at Universitas Negeri Medan. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with 16 participants (12 active swimmers and 4 coaches), passive participatory observation across 8 training sessions, and a 4-week pilot trial to evaluate the program's effectiveness. Data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase framework. Findings revealed that none of the athletes followed a formally structured stretching program, and coaches lacked evidence-based guidelines. A three-phase program was developed comprising dynamic stretching (10–15 minutes pre-training), sport-specific stretching (2–5 minutes per recovery segment during training), and static stretching (15–20 minutes post-training). The pilot trial demonstrated a mean improvement of 19.0° in shoulder range of motion and a reduction of 1.6 seconds in 50-meter swim time after four weeks of implementation. Validated by all four coaches, the program is applicable, evidence-based, and adaptable to the resource constraints of Indonesian university swimming programs.

Abstract

Butterfly stroke is one of the most physically demanding swimming styles, requiring exceptional upper-body flexibility and core coordination. Without adequate range of motion in the shoulders, back, and ankles, swimmers experience decreased propulsion and an increased risk of injury. This study aims to investigate the effect of a targeted stretching program on improving muscle flexibility and technical efficiency in butterfly stroke swimming. The methodology employed a quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest control group design involving 50 student-athletes divided equally into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group underwent a structured 6-week stretching regimen focusing on the pectoralis, deltoids, latissimus dorsi, and ankle joints, while the control group maintained their regular routine. Data were collected using goniometric measurements for shoulder flexibility and video analysis for stroke efficiency. The results indicated a significant increase in shoulder flexibility within the experimental group, with pretest and posttest scores rising from 36 to 61. Furthermore, enhanced ankle flexibility led to a more powerful dolphin kick and a more streamlined body position. In conclusion, integrating a specialized stretching program into regular training routines substantially enhances technical performance and reduces flexibility-related limitations in butterfly stroke swimmers. It is recommended for future research to analyze the direct correlation between ankle flexibility and underwater dolphin kick velocity.
