Abstract

Stres oksidatif memiliki peran signifikan dalam munculnya berbagai penyakit degeneratif, yang mendorong perlunya pencarian antioksidan alami dengan tingkat bioavailabilitas yang tinggi. Penelitian ini fokus pada pengembangan nanopartikel kitosan yang memuat ekstrak daun mangga arumanis (Mangifera indica L. var. Arumanis) serta mengevaluasi aktivitas antioksidannya. Nanopartikel disintesis menggunakan metode gelasi ionik dan dikarakterisasi menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak dan nanopartikel diuji menggunakan metode DPPH, kemudian dianalisis berdasarkan nilai IC?? dan dilakukan perbandingan terhadap asam askorbat sebagai standar positif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak kasar daun mangga arumanis memiliki IC?? sebesar 94,92 ppm, sementara enkapsulasi dalam nanopartikel kitosan menurunkan IC?? menjadi 80,05 ppm, menandakan peningkatan kemampuan menangkal radikal bebas. Asam askorbat tetap menunjukkan aktivitas tertinggi dengan IC?? 4,86 ppm. Secara keseluruhan, nanopartikel kitosan terbukti efektif meningkatkan aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak daun mangga arumanis dan memiliki potensi sebagai agen antioksidan alami.

Abstract

Lips are highly vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation due to the absence of natural protective structures such as hair follicles and sweat glands. Excessive UV exposure may lead to dryness, irritation, cracking, and premature aging. This study aimed to evaluate the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of carrot (Daucus carota L.) root extract and lip balm formulations containing the extract. Carrot roots were extracted using the reflux method with 96% ethanol. Lip balm formulations were prepared using varying concentrations of carrot extract: 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. SPF values were determined in vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at wavelengths of 290–320 nm. Results showed that SPF values increased with extract concentration, from 8.65 at 500 ppm to 18.78 at 2000 ppm, classified as maximum to ultra protection. Among the lip balm formulations, the highest SPF was obtained from formula F3 (20% extract) with an SPF of 5.35, categorized as moderate protection. The photoprotective effect is attributed to β-carotene and flavonoids in carrot extract, which act as antioxidants and UV absorbers. These findings suggest that carrot root extract has promising potential as a natural active ingredient in sunscreen formulations, particularly for lip care products.

Abstract

Traditional herbal medicines are widely used due to their perceived safety and natural origin; however, illegal addition of pharmaceutical substances such as paracetamol and sodium diclofenac poses adverse health effects. The objective of this study was to determine whether paracetamol and sodium diclofenac were present in jamu pegal linu samples via Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analysis. The study obtained all samples from local herbal stores in Pajarakan, Probolinggo. TLC analysis on silica gel GF254 plates was performed with compound-specific solvent systems: a 4:1 (v/v) ethyl acetate-chloroform mixture for paracetamol, and a 3:2 (v/v) ethyl acetate-n-hexane mixture for sodium diclofenac. Results revealed paracetamol was detected in three out of four samples with a retardation factor (Rf) of 0.61, while sodium diclofenac was found in three samples with Rf values around 0.90. One sample showed no presence of both compounds. These findings indicate illegal adulteration of herbal medicine, which may cause liver toxicity, kidney impairment, and cardiovascular risks. Therefore, strict supervision and consumer education are essential to prevent adverse health impacts.
