Abstract

Kata kunci - strategi kesantunan, konsep muka, permintaan, relasi kuasa Abstract - This research discusses the politeness strategy used by lecturers when doing thesis guidance with students. Abstract

Abstract – This paper investigates the existence of the sense of power in a text as a discourse. Corpus chosen is the front page of blog koinkeadilan.com as part of Gerakan Koin Peduli Prita (Coins for Prita Movement). The text is analysed for it contains the sense of power. The theoretical background for the analysis is critical discourse analysis (CDA) by Fairclough. The method used is library reseach method, as the researcher has dealt with text only, which was ready-made, a secondary data, and unlimited in terms of time and space. Another method used is qualitative method, as the research has included non-numerical data collection procedure, the result of which is open, the analysis used non-statistical method, and had a descriptive research question since it needs wholistic, wide, and deep exploration. The result shows that textually, the text used wordings, metaphors, transitivities, and modalities which represent the sense of power; as a discursive practice, the text was produced, circulated, and consumed as power based on its coherence and intertextuality features; and as a social practice, the text had power effect as it has successfully managed to practice hegemonic prosess by circulating power, yet not through violence but through communication and argumentation within a public sphere, as suggested by Habermas. Keywords – the front page of blog koinkeadilan.com, CDA, text, discursive practice, social practice, power.

Abstract

Abstract – This study is a research in translation studies, namely annotated translation, i.e. translation with notation. Source text (ST) chosen is two New Zealand children’s novel from Kiwi Bites series titled I’m Telling on You and Barry & Bitsa. Both are chosen for both are the works of the same author as well as written in New Zealand English which has several differences with that of Standard English. Besides, the text is also potential to become a qualified children’s reading, if translated. The analysis is focused on the translation of cultural words and terms. Theoretical framework used is translation technique (Hoed, 2006). Cultural words and terms discussed are as many as 15 items. The results show that translation techniques used more frequent are equivalence with notation. This means, most of cultural words and terms in ST have no lexical equivalence in the target language (TL).   Keywords: annotated translation, cultural word and term, translation technique.

Abstract

This study measures the level of acquired information about MBKM Programs from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology among the students of the English Language and Culture Study Program at the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia. It employed a quantitative method in which data was drawn from a population survey. The population survey was conducted using the Spadadikti questionnaire for data collection. This study looks into particular data in response to question 1, that is to what extent students are aware of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. The response data were attained on the Likert Scale. The population consisted of students who were registered as active students for the academic year 2015-2021 (first semester, third semester, fifth semester, and seventh semester). The first two semesters were classified as “MBKM non-targeted students” whereas the later semesters were “MBKM-targeted students”. This study hypothesized that MBKM-targeted students would likely be more knowledgeable about MBKM Programs, while it would vice versa for MBKM non-targeted students. The result suggests the level of acquired information about MBKM programs is equally low. In other words, students of English Language and Culture at the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia are not necessarily aware of the programs, regardless of whether they are intended to join them. This implies the study program has yet to find a means to socialize the information about MBKM optimally. Keywords - Culture Study Program, English Language, Information, Implementation, Likert Scale, MBKM, Non-Targeted, Survey Spadadikti, Targeted Students

Abstract

This research is a translation-studies one discussing translation techniques used in Indonesian subtitle for English utterances and Indonesian utterances consisting English either words or expressions in the dialog of Aruna dan Lidahnya (2018) film. Analysis is done for utterances consisting code-switching and code-mixing. Methods used are descriptive-qualitative and library ones. Data are collected with content-analysis technique. Source text (ST) data are classified using code-switching and code-mixing classification. Target text (TT) data are classified using translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002). Out of 72 data of bilingualism in use, 61.6% are code-mixing while 38.9% are code switching. Yet out of 37 utterances translated into Indonesian subtitle, 54.05% are code-switching while 45.95% are code-mixing. Out of 18 translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), only 11 techniques used. Established equivalent is the most frequent techniques used, i.e. 23,1% out of 39 data in TT. The result also shows that all 11 translation techniques used are fit with the principle of subtitling according to Ho (2015). Keywords – translation, subtitle, code switching, code mixing, film Indonesia
