Abstract

This research investigates the way dystopia as film genre is attributed with catastrophe or, what will be regarded here as apocalyptic events. We question the way in which the genre represents state of affairs of humanity in the face of catastrophe, in catastrophe, and after catastrophe. We conducted a narrative analysis under the account of semiotic cognitive approach, by identifying narrated events, and actions of the protagonist as constituting parts of event. We argue that narrative in dystopian films represent three types of apocalyptic schema (i.e. pre-apocalyptic, apocalyptic, and post-apocalyptic). Each schema seems to have distinct model of storyline, regardless of the predefined genre of the film (e.g. adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.). Despite the distinct schemas, the analyzed films illustrate typical tone of hopefulness wherein humanity prevails over catastrophe and dystopian state of affairs. Another typical representation in dystopian films analyzed here is portrayal of collective fear among the protagonist. Our study leads to a point that humanity is portrayed adaptive to catastrophic situations, therefore it is able somehow to survive. Here we offer narrative standard in dystopia genre with the light of cognitive semiotics perspective, which differs to a great degree with theories offered by classical literary studies.

Abstract

This paper discusses about how ‘Enola Holmes’ film is a diegetic extension that represents feministic ideas. Intend to explain the relation between the feministic ideas and the concept of postmodernism. It is argued that the narrative of Enola Holmes reuses and recycles narrative of Sherlock Holmes in form of pastiche so to extend the pre-existing grand narrative of Sherlock Holmes. The extension makes it possible to render a portrayal of independent and self-determined female detective.

Abstract

Abstrak - Meskipun Pramoedya Ananta Toer telah dianggap penulis fiksi prominen di lingkup kesusastraan, ternyata salah satu karyanya yang berprestasi (Cerita dari Blora) belum mendapat sorotan telaah sastra. Makalah ini mengambil satu judul cerpen dari antologi itu secara spesifik yaitu Yang sudah Hilang. Pertanyaaan yang dilontarkan di sini adalah bagaimana pembahasaan teks cerpen tersebut membangun representasi adegan referen atau model situasi. Prosesi teks semiotika kognitif digunakan di sini, khususnya prinsip moda kesadaran Chafe, untuk menghasilkan interpretasi yang memperhitungkan objektivitas dalam proses inferensial berbasis pengalaman pemaknaan. Sehubungan dengan hal itu saya berargumen pembahasaan dalam teks menghasilkan model situasi simulasi pengenangan masa lalu terfragmentasi secara introspektif dalam moda percakapan. Masa lalu yang dikenang terfragmentasi dan menghasilkan ironi dramatik. Model situasi tersebut kelihatannya lebih menampilkan elegansi Pram sebagai penulis yang bermain bahasa dan makna, ketimbang fenomena kontekstual yang terlalu lekat dengan subjektivitas.Kata Kunci - Prosesi Teks Semiotika Kognitif, Model Situasi, Moda Kesadaran, Ironi DramaticAbstract - Despite the popularity of Pramoedya Ananta Toer as a promninent and controversial Indonesian literary figure, his prestigious short story anthology entitled Cerita dari Blora seems rather poorly understudied. By far, the existing literary criticism on this work provides highly contextual and subjective interpretation. This paper then is aimed to reading closely Yang Sudah Hilang, one of short story from the anthology. Question raised here is how does language of the text build representation of referent scene or situation model. This study uses cognitive semiotics text processing, an approach that takes account objective evidence and experientially-based inference. Conscious mode principle, proposed by Chafe (1994), is employed as theoretical perspective in drawing interpretation. It is argued that language in the text built a situation model wherein protagonist is simultaneously memorizing her loss and telling to readers her fragmented past in conversational mode. Moreover, despite her introspection the protagonist does not seem aware what brings her to the present moment where she is already losing important people of her life. In general, the situation model argued may be offered as a standard interpretation of Yang sudah Hilang which is far from subjectivity and derived from meaning experience triggered by language.Keywords - Cognitive Semiotics Text Processing, Situation Model, Conscious Mode, Dramatic Irony

Abstract

This study measures the level of acquired information about MBKM Programs from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology among the students of the English Language and Culture Study Program at the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia. It employed a quantitative method in which data was drawn from a population survey. The population survey was conducted using the Spadadikti questionnaire for data collection. This study looks into particular data in response to question 1, that is to what extent students are aware of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. The response data were attained on the Likert Scale. The population consisted of students who were registered as active students for the academic year 2015-2021 (first semester, third semester, fifth semester, and seventh semester). The first two semesters were classified as “MBKM non-targeted students” whereas the later semesters were “MBKM-targeted students”. This study hypothesized that MBKM-targeted students would likely be more knowledgeable about MBKM Programs, while it would vice versa for MBKM non-targeted students. The result suggests the level of acquired information about MBKM programs is equally low. In other words, students of English Language and Culture at the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia are not necessarily aware of the programs, regardless of whether they are intended to join them. Abstract

This research examines students’ understanding of intercultural communication issues through text reading using a short story entitled Channel at the Bottom of the Sea written by a Singaporean author, Stephanie Ye. A readers’ response qualitative method is used in conducting this research which uses a literary text focusing on multicultural themes. By using Martin and Nakayama’s intercultural communication concepts specifically on the four barriers in intercultural communication, this analysis examines 25 students’ response in understanding, reacting, and reflecting intercultural communication cases.  In conclusion, it can be seen that 64% students responded well enough in perceiving the issues of intercultural communication in a multicultural context. Abstract

Our article aims to characterize the conceptual architecture of Indonesian grammar theoretically through a cognitive semantic approach. In its implementation, we applied introspective reflection on language data in the form of sentences that have been collected into a corpus. Applying the Conceptual Structuring System (Talmy, 2000b), we introspected the semantic function of grammar elements and their coherence with lexical elements that constitute sentences. We propose that conceptualization in the Indonesian language relies on the system of pairing and connecting morphemes, or what will be regarded here as linguistic particles. In other words, a sentence is a composition of complex particles that externalizes the organization of ideas, thoughts, or concepts as a predication construed into cognitive representations in the form of event schemas. Furthermore, the conceptual organization expressed as predication configures conceptual meaning with respect to spatiotemporal domains. This article sheds light on the cognitive architecture that conceptualizes Indonesian grammar, contributing to a deeper understanding of its structural characteristics and the experience of language meaning-making.  AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkarakterisasikan arsitektur konseptual gramatika Indonesia secara teoretis melalui pendekatan semantik kognitif. Pada pelaksanaannya peneliti menerapkan refleksi introspektif atas data bahasa berupa kalimat yang telah dikumpulkan ke dalam korpus. Menerapkan Sistem Penataan Konseptual (Talmy, 2000b), peneliti mengintrospeksi fungsi semantik unsur gramatika dan kesinambungannya dengan unsur leksikal yang mengkonstitusikan kalimat. Peneliti memproposisikan konseptualisasi dalam bahasa Indonesia bertumpu pada sistem pemasangan dan penghubungan morfem atau apa yang akan disebut di sini sebagai partikel linguistik. Dalam kata lain, kalimat adalah susunan partikel kompleks yang mengeksternalisasikan organisasi ide, pikiran, atau konsep sebagai sebuah predikasi yang ditafsirkan ke dalam representasi kognitif berupa skema kejadian. Selanjutnya, organisasi konseptual yang dinyatakan sebagai predikasi mengkonfigurasi makna konseptual berdasarkan domain ruang dan waktu. Artikel ini mencerahkan arsitektur kognitif yang dikonseptualisasikan gramatika Indonesia, dalam cara yang mengkontribusikan pemahaman lebih dalam tentang karakteristik struktural dan pengalaman pemaknaan bahasa.

Abstract

Penelitian ini melaporkan temuan-temuan mengenai (i) pembelajaran sosial atas norma dan aturan institutional tentang karakter ideal mahasiswa, serta (ii) formasi kelompok dan perilaku normatif dalam bekerja sama antar individu dalam kelompok. Penelitian ini menerapkan serangkaian aktivitas pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara sumber dan penelusuran dokumen institusional, penyebaran kuesioner kepada populasi dosen,  kuesioner dengan sampel purposif kepada mahasiswa di lingkungan Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya Universitas Al-azhar Indonesia (FIB UAI), serta peninjauan terhadap kasus kelompok kerja di sejumlah mata kuliah Program Studi Bahasa dan Kebudayaan Inggris Universitas Al-azhar Indonesia. Penelitian menemukan dosen dan mahasiswa memiliki kesamaan ide tentang karakter ideal mahasiswa yang cenderung merujuk kepada tata nilai dan kemampuan kerja secara umum. Namun, pembentukan wawasan ini tidak melalui pembelajaran sosial yang mentransmisikan wawasan tersebut sebagai informasi budaya. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini menemukan formasi kelompok mengkonsekuensikan pembentukan ekspektasi perilaku kooperatif. Pelanggaran terhadap ekspektasi tersebut mendatangkan hukuman sosial dan institusional. Penelitian ini mempercontohkan upaya inisial dalam mencermati transmisi dan evolusi budaya di universitas. Kata Kunci – Formasi Kelompok, Kooperativitas, Norma, Transmisi dan Evolusi Budaya, Universitas.

Abstract

Grumpynurc merupakan UMKM yang bergerak di bidang kerajinan rajutan. Selama ini, Grumpynurc menjual produknya baik secara daring maupun luring. Promosi dan pemasaran produk secara luring dilakukan melalui penjualan langsung di bazar-bazar maupun pameran-pameran. Sedangkan penjualan secara daring dilakukan melalui penjualan daring dan media sosial.  Produk rajutan yang dihasilkan oleh Grumpynurc menarik pasar yang cukup luas tidak hanya peminat dari Indonesia tetapi juga banyak yang berasal dari negara-negara lain, termasuk para ekspatriat yang bekerja di Indonesia. Situasi ini menyebabkan Grumpynurc membutuhkan sarana promosi yang dapat menjangkau berbagai kalangan peminat produknya. Kondisi pandemi, membuat Grumpynurc harus dapat memperkenalkan dan mempromosikan produknya secara daring. Oleh karena itulah kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini berupa pengelolaan dan pelatihan pembuatan konten berbahasa Inggris di Instagram UMKM Grumpynurc. Pendampingan dan pelatihan yang dilakukan adalah pelatihan fotografi dan videografi sederhana, pelatihan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa yang digunakan dalam konten Instagram, pelatihan content creator, pendampingan pembuatan profil perusahaan dan katalog elektronik. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah konten yang dapat diunggah di akun Instagram mitra. Kegiatan ini mampu meningkatkan kreativitas dan keragaman konten dilihat dari peningkatan jumlah unggahan, pengikut akun, dan interaksi dengan viewers (pertanyaan tentang produk, tawaran mengikuti bazar/event, pembelian produk, dan pembukaan kelas rajut)Kata kunci: Media Sosial, Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris, Instagram, UMKM, Promosi

Abstract

This research reports findings about (i) social learning of norms and institutional rules about students ideal character, and (ii) group formation and normative behaviour among cooperating individuals within group. Researchers interviewed a number of sources and studied institutional documents, spread questionnaire to population of lecturers and conducted purposive sampling to students of Faculty of Humanities, University of Al-azhar Indonesia, and reviewed cases of students groupwork in a few courses held by English Language and Culture Study Programme. This research finds lecturers and students share the same idea about students’ ideal character; the idea tends to refer attitude and soft skills. However, the knowledge is not attained via social learning that transmits the idea as cultural information. This research finds group formation consequently establishes expectation of cooperative behaviour among the group members. Violating the expectation leads to social and institutional punishments. This research exemplifies an initial attempt to scrutinize cultural transmission and evolution in university.
