Abstract

The Caribbean region, despite its abundance of tropical agricultural commodities such as mangoes, continues to face challenges in product diversification and value-added processing. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the productive capacity and economic empowerment of Caribbean communities—particularly small-scale farmers, agroindustry actors, and homemakers—through mango-based product development. Implemented by Politeknik ATI Padang in collaboration with the Non-Aligned Movement Center for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM-CSSTC), the program was conducted virtually over two days in May 2025 using an integrated explicit–tacit knowledge transfer approach. Explicit knowledge was delivered through structured digital materials and video-based instruction, while tacit knowledge was reinforced through experiential learning, practical assignments, and interactive discussions. A total of 297 participants enrolled for the program, with 30 participants actively engaging through Zoom sessions and 267 participants accessing the training via YouTube livestreaming. The primary outcomes of the program included measurable improvements in participants’ technical competence, production readiness, and sustainability awareness. Evaluation results showed an increase in participants’ average scores from 84.4 (pre-test) to 89.2 (post-test), indicating enhanced understanding of mango jelly processing, packaging, waste utilization, and basic business planning. Moreover, participants successfully demonstrated their ability to independently produce mango jelly and apply organic waste management practices using mango peel residues. Beyond skill acquisition, the program fostered entrepreneurial motivation and promoted the adoption of circular economy principles at the community level. These findings highlight the effectiveness of virtual community empowerment initiatives in achieving tangible capacity-building outcomes and supporting sustainable, resource-based economic development across geographically dispersed regions.

Abstract

Fluktuasi permintaan ekspor merupakan tantangan utama dalam perencanaan produksi industri oleokimia di Batam, khususnya pada produk shortening yang berorientasi ekspor. Ketidaktepatan peramalan dapat menimbulkan inefisiensi operasional seperti kelebihan produksi maupun kekurangan stok. Penelitian ini bertujuan menentukan metode peramalan paling akurat antara Single Moving Average (SMA) dan Single Exponential Smoothing (SES) dalam memprediksi permintaan ekspor shortening. Analisis dilakukan terhadap data historis permintaan selama 12 bulan dengan indikator kesalahan Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), Mean Square Error (MSE), dan Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). Hasil menunjukkan metode SES (α = 0,9) paling akurat dengan MAD = 166, MSE = 33.231, dan MAPE = 3,35%. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa model SES lebih sesuai untuk data permintaan fluktuatif dengan tren meningkat moderat, sehingga dapat meningkatkan efisiensi perencanaan produksi dan pengelolaan rantai pasok industri manufaktur ekspor.

Abstract

Automation is increasingly applied in food-processing industries to enhance production efficiency. However, in onion-processing operations, peeling machines often fail to completely remove the outer skin, requiring workers to perform manual re-peeling to ensure raw-material quality. This task involves repetitive hand motions and forward-leaning postures, which may contribute to musculoskeletal strain. This study aims to evaluate the work posture of manual onion re-peeling workers using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) methods. Four workers participated in the study through direct observation, photo documentation, and questionnaire administration. NBM results indicated that the most frequent complaints occurred in the the shoulders, upper arms, elbows, forearms, wrists, and lower back. The average RULA score of 6 indicates a high-risk posture requiring prompt ergonomic intervention. The strong alignment between NBM and RULA findings reinforces the accuracy of the ergonomic diagnosis. This study highlights the need for ergonomic improvements such as workstation height adjustment, provision of lumbar-supported seating, micro-break scheduling, and simple tool redesign to reduce MSD risks and improve productivity in food-processing operations.
