Abstract

Smoking has been shown to adversely affect the oral cavity by altering its physiological conditions, thereby promoting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and increasing the risk of oral diseases. It also reduces salivary pH, rendering it more acidic, and facilitates plaque accumulation. This study aimed to identify the presence of pathogenic microorganisms (Staphylococcus spp., Candida spp., and Entamoeba gingivalis) in the saliva and oral cavity of individuals who smoke. An analytical survey with a cross-sectional design was conducted using 40 samples. Microbial identification was carried out through culture techniques on specific media for bacteria and fungi, while E. gingivalis was detected via direct microscopic observation using safranin staining. 40 samples were analyzed and showed 31 tested positive for at least one of the target microorganisms: Staphylococcus spp., Candida spp., or E. gingivalis, from both saliva and oral swab specimens. Staphylococcus sp. and Candida sp, detected in 13 samples. E. gingivalis was identified in 7 samples. Saliva samples yielded more comprehensive results than oral swabs, suggesting that saliva more accurately reflects the overall microbial condition of the oral cavity.

Abstract

Intestinal nematodes are primarily transmitted through the soil. In the human body, the worms travel through the bloodstream to the heart, lungs, and throat, then are swallowed and enter the intestines. Severe worm infections can lead to malnutrition and impaired growth and development. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in effectiveness between the Harada Mori method and the stool method in measuring the association between STH infection and cattle breeders in Neggara Bungbungan Hamlet. The research method used was quantitative. This study was conducted at the Parasitology Laboratory of Noor Huda Mustofa University from April 5-19, 2025. The sample size was 25 respondents suspected of having worms, whose erythrocyte levels were then examined. Data were collected using a questionnaire and IBM SPSS 25, presented in tabular form, and then explained in narrative form. STH infection in the stool method was classified as high, with 23 eggs (92%) found, and in the Harada Mori method, 17 larvae (68%). The results of the marginal homogeneity statistical test obtained a p-value of 0.000 < 0.005. The relationship between STH infection in the stool method and eosinophil levels obtained a p-value of 0.016 < 0.005 using the Kruskal Wallis statistical test. There is a significant difference between the stool method and the Harada Mori method. There is a significant correlation between the stool method and eosinophil levels.

Abstract

Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp are rod-shaped gram-negative bacteria that are often found in the context of public health. Klebsiella sp is a pathogenic bacterium and can cause diarrhea, pneumonia infections, urinary tract infections, wound infections, meningitis to bacteremia. while Shigella sp is a pathogenic bacteria that causes dysentery diarrhea characterized by acute diarrhea containing blood and mucus, accompanied by abdominal pain and tenesmus, which is spread through contaminated food and drinks. Prevention of diarrheal diseases and respiratory tract infections caused by bacteria can be prevented by using antibiotics, but excessive use of antibiotics can lead to side effects. So natural treatment is used, namely papaya flowers because papaya flowers contain saponins, tannins and flavanoid compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial inhibition of papaya flower extract at a concentration of 35%, 50%, 65% against Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp. This study is an experimental research using a quantitative descriptive test method. The sample of this study is papaya flower extract on the growth of Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp. bacteria. The test method used is sub-diffusion. The results showed that the concentration of 65% was the most effective concentration to inhibit the growth of Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp bacteria with a yield of 27.6 mm which was in the medium category. Papaya flower extract has antibacterial compounds (flavonoids, tannins and saponins) that are able to inhibit the growth of Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp bacteria.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This community service activity aims to increase students' knowledge and awareness of the importance of blood type testing and early detection of worms. The examination was carried out at SMAN 1 Kwanyar Bangkalan involving 101 students as participants. The methods used include ABO system blood type testing with the slide method and worm testing using the flotation method with saturated NaCl solution. The results of the examination showed the distribution of blood types as follows: blood type O as many as 38 students, B as many as 40 students, A as many as 18 students, and AB as many as 5 students, all with rhesus positive. Examination of worms showed the presence of eggs and larvae of several types of worms such as Ascaris and Trichuris. This activity not only provides benefits in the form of basic health data for schools, but also succeeds in increasing students' understanding of the importance of maintaining personal health through blood type detection and prevention of parasitic infections. Thus, this activity acts as an educational and promotive means in building adolescent health awareness from an early age. Keywords: Blood Type, Worms, Laboratory Tests, Adolescents, Community Service.
