Abstract

Background: The rapid growth of the Middle Eastern tourist market demands advanced communication skills from tourism practitioners. However, current teaching materials for Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP) in Tourism are often limited to conventional transactional offline scenarios, which are increasingly less relevant to modern digital promotion needs. Purpose: This study explores the pragmatic functions of speech acts in Arabic tourism promotional discourse on TikTok and examines their pedagogical implications for developing adaptive, industry-relevant ASP materials. Method: Employing Krippendorff's qualitative content analysis, this study analyzed 61 speech units extracted from five purposively selected travel-agency TikTok accounts with high engagement and explicit Arabic promotional content targeting Middle Eastern tourists. Out of 124 transcribed units 61 relevant commissive and directive units were analyzed. The data were gathered through documentation and coded based on Searle and Leech's pragmatic functional schemes, focusing specifically on persuasive strategies within digital discourse. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal a clear predominance of commissive speech acts (77%) over directive speech acts (23%). This suggests that digital tourism marketing discourse tends to prioritize trust-building through promises and guarantees over direct instruction. Linguistically, this persuasion is realized through the efficient use of ḥadhfu al-mubtada’ (subject omission) structures, the integration of digital technical lexicons, and the strategic code-switching into the ‘ammiyyah (colloquial) variety to foster emotional closeness. Conclusions and Implications: This study highlights the necessity of updating current educational resources. It recommends reorienting the ASP Tourism curriculum toward a functional-pragmatic approach that integrates digital copywriting skills, technological literacy, and sociolinguistic flexibility, ultimately preparing competent tourism graduates for the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of barracks-based education in Arabic language learning for military personnel, focusing on its implementation in supporting the acquisition of Arabic language proficiency. Arabic language learning for military-specific purposes requires an approach that integrates linguistic competence with a specialized curriculum within the framework of military education. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of curriculum documents and instructional materials. The findings indicate that Arabic language learning is integrated with the Three Basic Patterns of Military Education, encompassing attitude and behavior development (10%), Arabic language knowledge and skills development (80%), and military physical development (10%). These three dimensions operate simultaneously within a dormitory-based system over a 12-week period, totaling 600 instructional hours. At the operational level, the implementation demonstrates synergy among military instructors with their multiple roles, learners with their internal motivation, and the Al-'Arabiyyah Baina Yadaik instructional materials, all of which contribute to the gradual and integrated acquisition of Arabic language skills. In addition, challenges were identified, including the heterogeneity of learners' educational backgrounds and the limited availability of contextual instructional materials that accommodate diverse proficiency levels.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the translation quality of Arabic texts from Mulakhkhas Qawa'id Al-Lughah Al-‘Arabiyyah by Fuad Ni'mah, translated by Abu Ahmad Al-Mutarjim and by the machine translation tool QuillBot.Ai. A qualitative descriptive approach is employed, using Peter Newmark's translation theory as the analytical framework, particularly focusing on the aspects of accuracy, acceptability, and clarity. The data consists of vocabulary and sentence structures analyzed to evaluate how well each translator conveys the original meaning of the text into Indonesian. The findings reveal that the human translator performs better in preserving the context, structure, and intended meaning of the original text. In contrast, QuillBot.Ai tends to produce meaning distortion and lacks conformity to proper linguistic norms in Indonesian. This suggests that although machine translation can assist in translation tasks, human intervention remains crucial, especially in translating scientific and religious texts. This study contributes to the understanding of the limitations of machine translation and recommends further research into human-machine collaboration in translation practices.

Abstract

The Nurul Falah Islamic Boarding School has an ongoing program that focuses on enhancing Arabic language skills and Fiqh through the ‘Kitab’ Recitation Competition. Arabic language studies in this competition are conducted using the yellow ‘kitab’, as the boarding school employs this book as its teaching material. Therefore, this study aims to observe the role of the ‘Kitab’ Recitation Competition, specifically in Arabic language learning, including speaking skills, reading skills, as well as grammatical rules and translation. The research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, gathering data through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data are then analyzed using triangulation, which involves data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The findings indicate that the ‘Kitab’ Recitation Competition held at the boarding school plays a significant role in Arabic language learning, as evidenced from the preparation process to the implementation.
