Abstract

This article examines Matthieu Ricard's concept of altruism and Ibn Miskawaih's Islamic ethics. The main issue discussed is how these two different philosophical traditions view altruism and whether the integration of the two can provide a more comprehensive understanding of universal moral values. The main research question is how the spiritual compassion emphasized by Ricard and the rational virtues proposed by Ibn Miskawaih can be synthesized into a whole framework of altruism. The method used is a comparative philosophical approach with the data analysis techniques applied in this study are interpretive descriptive analysis, analyzing primary suber and literature related to the discussion being studied and the ethical principles of the two thinkers to find similarities and differences. The findings of the study suggest that Ricard highlights enlightenment and universal happiness through compassion, while Ibn Miskawaih emphasizes happiness and rational virtue as the basis of moral behavior. This article introduces the concept of transcendental altruism, a synthesis that combines compassion with rational virtue, offering a holistic approach to the ethics of altruism that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. This perspective enriches the theoretical discourse on altruism while also providing practical implications for fostering moral universality in diverse societies. This study contributes to contemporary ethics by showing how cross-cultural philosophical dialogue can deepen our understanding of altruism as a fundamental value of humanity.

Abstract

Amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar is one of the fundamental principles in Islamic teachings that functions to maintain moral integrity and social order within the Muslim community. This concept is not merely normative–theological in nature, but also requires appropriate and contextual methods of implementation. This study aims to examine the methods of amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar according to Ibn Kathīr and Muḥammad Hasbi Aṣ-Ṣiddieqy, as well as to analyze the similarities and differences in their perspectives. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach and comparative tafsīr analysis. Data were collected through an examination of Qur’anic verses related to amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar and a study of the exegetical works of both scholars. The findings indicate that Ibn Kathīr views amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar as an obligation incumbent upon all Muslims, with its implementation adjusted to individual capacity, whether through authority, verbal admonition, or rejection in the heart. Meanwhile, Hasbi Aṣ-Ṣiddieqy emphasizes that, at the practical level, this obligation is entrusted to groups possessing scholarly competence, social awareness, and moral integrity, and must be accompanied by mechanisms of supervision and correction. Comparatively, these two perspectives are complementary and remain relevant in the contemporary context, as they integrate broad community participation with a professional and responsible implementation of amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar.

Abstract

Sexual violence against children and adolescents is a growing concern because it can cause long-term physical, psychological, emotional, and social impacts. Cases of sexual violence occur not only in public settings but also in environments considered safe and religious, such as houses of worship, Al-Quran Education Centers (TPQ), Islamic boarding schools, and other religious educational institutions. This situation demonstrates the importance of education and prevention efforts involving children, adolescents, parents, and the community. This community service activity aims to increase public understanding and awareness of the dangers of sexual violence and preventive measures. The activity was held on June 1, 2026, at the Ar-Rahman Mosque, Lingkar Barat Village, Bengkulu City, involving approximately 30 participants consisting of children, adolescents, and parents. The method used was participatory socialization and education through material delivery, discussion, and question and answer sessions. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' understanding of the forms of sexual violence, its impacts, the importance of self-protection, and reporting mechanisms in the event of sexual violence. This activity is expected to be a preventive measure in creating a safe environment and supporting the protection of children from various forms of sexual violence.
