Abstract

Correctional institutions represent high-risk environments for psychological disturbance, with inmates frequently experiencing complex mental health challenges particularly concerning family relations, self-acceptance, and social interaction. This study aims to implement and evaluate group guidance services utilizing problem-solving techniques within a Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework to enhance the mental well-being of adult early inmates at Lapas Kelas III Rangkasbitung. The study employed PAR design involving 50 inmates. Preliminary needs assessment using the Alat Ungkap Masalah (AUM) Umum Masyarakat instrument revealed dominant issues in family relations (13.33%), personal self (12.97%), and social relations (10.76%). Eight structured group guidance sessions were implemented, systematically integrating problem-solving stages from issue identification to collaborative action planning. Findings indicate that PAR-based group guidance significantly improved participants' self-awareness, interpersonal communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving competencies. The participatory methodology effectively fostered active engagement, ownership of the change process, and real-time adaptation based on group dynamics. These findings validate integration of data-driven assessment, structured group techniques, and participatory frameworks as a sustainable strategy for psychological rehabilitation in correctional settings.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the mental health conditions of inmates and describe the implementation of group guidance services based on the results of the General Community Problem Identification Instrument (Alat Ungkap Masalah or AUM) at Class III Rangkasbitung Correctional Institution. The study employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving 50 inmates selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the General Community AUM instrument to identify various problems experienced by the inmates. The findings revealed that Social Relationships (HSO), Family Conditions and Relationships (KHK), and Personal Self (DPI) were the most dominant problem areas. These issues were related to difficulties in social interaction, longing for and conflicts within the family, as well as personal challenges that potentially affected the inmates’ mental health. Based on the identified needs, group guidance services were implemented to assist inmates in understanding and managing their problems. The implementation of the services showed that inmates became more open in expressing their feelings, were able to share experiences with other group members, and developed greater self-awareness regarding their personal conditions. Therefore, need-based group guidance services can make a positive contribution to supporting inmates’ mental health and the rehabilitation process at Class III Rangkasbitung Correctional Institution.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to describe the implementation of classical guidance services based on the results of the AUM Umum Masyarakat assessment for inmates at Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Kelas III Rangkasbitung. The study focuses on problems related to social relationships, personal issues, and family relationship conditions among early adulthood inmates. PAR (Participatory Action Research): This study employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving active participation between researchers and inmates during the guidance process. The subjects consisted of 50 inmates aged 18–25 years who completed the AUM Umum Masyarakat assessment. Based on the assessment results, 30 respondents with the highest problem scores in the areas of Social Relationships (HSO), Personal Self (DPI), and Family Conditions and Relationships (KHK) were selected. The implementation of classical guidance services was conducted through discussions, question-and-answer techniques, quizzes, and presentation media. Results: The findings indicated that most inmates experienced difficulties in emotional regulation, self-control when facing criticism and social judgment, and effective interpersonal communication. The implementation of classical guidance services helped participants improve emotional understanding, interpersonal communication skills, and social interaction abilities within the correctional environment.

Abstract

Objective: Students' mental health is an essential factor supporting their personal, social, and academic development, so guidance and counseling services must be designed according to students' actual needs. This study describes the implementation of a needs-based guidance and counseling program to strengthen students' mental health at SMP Negeri 2 Labuan. A descriptive qualitative case-study approach was applied through three interrelated stages: diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation. Participants consisted of 31 seventh-grade students who completed the Student Needs Assessment (AKPD), together with students in grades VII and VIII who received classroom guidance, group guidance, group counseling, and individual counseling based on identified needs. Data were collected through observations, the AKPD, interviews, documentation, student worksheets (LKPD), reflective notes, and counseling records, then analyzed through triangulation of sources. Findings show that classroom guidance, group guidance, individual counseling, and group counseling effectively strengthened students' self-understanding, discipline, time management, and interpersonal communication, while helping address school avoidance and learning difficulties. The program also strengthened collaboration among school counselors, teachers, and school administrators in promoting students' mental health. These findings indicate that a needs-based guidance and counseling program can effectively support students' mental well-being.
