Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a commodity with numerous benefits and high economic value. One of the major pests causing yield losses in chili pepper cultivation is the fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.). Its control can be achieved through an integrated pest management approach utilizing traps, pheromones, and insecticides. This study aimed to determine the effect of two types of traps and the insecticide profenofos on the intensity of fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.) infestation in chili pepper plants. The study employed a randomized block design (RBD) consisting of four treatments: control (A0), yellow traps (A1), petrogenol-based traps (A2), and the chemical insecticide profenofos (A3). The observed variables included fruit fly infestation intensity, number of fruits, and fruit weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by an Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 95% confidence level. Petrogenol-based traps were effective in controlling fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.) infestation in chili pepper (C. frutescens L.) plants, with an infestation intensity of 1,83%, producing up to 162,80 fruits and a fruit weight of 34,34 g.

Abstract

Shallots are a highly economical agricultural commodity to develop due to their numerous benefits, including their role as a highly sought-after kitchen spice. Similarly, cattle farming is also a key component. Watukalangkari Village, a village in Bombana Regency, boasts significant natural and human resource potential for shallot cultivation and livestock farming, particularly cattle farming. However, both shallot and cattle farming have not been optimally developed, resulting in lower productivity. Therefore, this initiative aims to provide technical guidance on integrating shallot cultivation management with cattle farming. The implementation method for this community service is through counseling and technical guidance on integrating shallot cultivation management with cattle farming. The implementation team has provided technical guidance to target partners in the form of a pilot project integrating shallot cultivation management with cattle farming. By integrating the shallot cultivation management system with cattle farming, target partners can address the problem of fertilizer shortages for shallot planting, reduce the negative impacts arising from free-range cattle grazing without pens, and meet the need for sufficient and more secure livestock feed.

Abstract

Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, is a major threat to global rice production, causing yield losses of up to 80%. Accurate assessment of disease severity is essential for developing resistant rice varieties and implementing effective management strategies. However, traditional visual observation methods, while widely used, are prone to subjectivity and reduced accuracy. This study evaluates the accuracy of image analysis for assessing rice plant resistance to BLB. Disease severity was assessed using both visual observation and image analysis, with results quantified through the Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) and infection rate calculations. Image analysis outperformed visual observation, achieving an accuracy rate above 96%, compared to less than 90% for the latter. The Ciherang variety demonstrated greater resistance to BLB, with lower AUDPC and infection rates when assessed using image analysis. Conversely, visual observation produced contradictory results, highlighting its limitations. This study concludes that image analysis provides a more objective, reproducible, and accurate approach to assessing disease severity, with implications for breeding programs and integrated disease management systems. Further research is recommended to validate these methods across a broader range of rice genotypes and environmental conditions.
