Abstract

Environmental issues have become an important subject of studies among academics. One of the efforts taken to address these issues is to explore the richness of the indigenous cultures of traditional societies. This study aims to present the traditional wisdom of the Manggaraians in responding to environmental crises. The study presented in this article focuses itself on digging out the concept of universal communion in the ritual of Barong Waé of the Manggaraians in eastern Indonesia and gives a critical study on it in the perspective of universal communion of Laudato Si’ as one of official teachings of the Catholic Church on ecology. Data collected for this study are obtained by using in-depth interviews and studying available literatures. It was found that the concept of universal communion in Barong Waé Ritual of the Manggaraians is similar to the concept of universal communion in the Encyclic of Laudato Si’. The richness of the concept of universal communion in the ritual of Barong Waé of the Manggaraians is juxtaposed with richness of the concept of universal communion in the Encyclic of Laudato Si and this juxtaposition can become a very valuable contribution to a pastoral ecology of the Catholic Church.

Abstract

Traditional children’s games are an important part of local culture, functioning not only as recreational activities but also as spaces for transmitting values and shaping children’s character. Amid social change and the growing dominance of digital culture, traditional games among Manggarai children face challenges to their continuity. This study aims to analyze the social and cultural values and philosophical meanings embedded in traditional children’s games in Manggarai and to examine their potential as a medium for culture-based education. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach conducted from April to July 2025 in Kolang, Pacar, Rego, and Rahong. Sixteen informants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of eight adults and eight children. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation and were analyzed thematically through data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The findings show that traditional games, including Pande Ipang, Likiliang, Pasang Tepeng, Tali Merdeka, Paki Mangka, Teka Watu, and Banga Welu, provide spaces for social learning through which children directly experience cooperation, discipline, sportsmanship, solidarity, responsibility, honesty, patience, and fairness through game rules, role distribution, turn-taking, strategic interaction, and acceptance of winning and losing. The games also function as a medium of enculturation by introducing children to Manggarai cultural identity and communal values through lived play experiences. Philosophically, traditional games represent a miniature of social life that brings together individual and communal interests, freedom and rules, and competition and solidarity. The study concludes that traditional games constitute a form of ethnopedagogy that remains relevant to character education and the preservation of cultural identity and should therefore be contextually integrated into local-content learning, character education, and community-based cultural programs.

Abstract

This article examines the challenges faced by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as modern retail chains such as Alfamart and Indomaret continue to expand across Indonesia. The expansion is analyzed as a concrete expression of neoliberal capitalism that has reshaped economic relations at the local level. Through a critical political-economy approach and systematic literature review, this study investigates how neoliberalism fosters unequal competition between large capital and the people’s economy, while tracing the structural consequences for small traders and community livelihoods. The findings reveal that modern retail growth has produced structural economic inequality, shifted community consumption habits, and been sustained by government policies that favor large investors over small businesses. Against this backdrop, the People’s Economy (Ekonomi Kerakyatan) grounded in Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution offers a viable alternative paradigm built on solidarity, equitable distribution, and economic sovereignty. Practical measures include cooperative revitalization, MSME digitalization, affirmative policies requiring local product quotas in modern retail, and local government regulations that limit minimarket expansion. This study concludes that national economic sovereignty depends on the protection and genuine empowerment of MSMEs as the backbone of an equitable people’s economy.
