Abstract

This community service article aims to re-actualize the understanding of Islamic inheritance law among female students through the perspective of gender justice and maqāsid al-syarī’ah. The program was conducted at Asrama Fathimah Az-Zahra YASINAT Wuluhan Jember involving 30 senior female students as participants. The study employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach implemented through cycles of problem identification, action planning, mentoring implementation, and collective reflection. Data were collected through participatory observation, focus group discussions, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of reflective notes. The findings indicate that participants initially understood inheritance law in a textual and mathematical manner without considering the changing social roles of women within contemporary families. After dialogical mentoring and maqāsid-based analysis, participants demonstrated increased critical awareness regarding substantive justice, social responsibility, and public welfare in inheritance distribution. The program affirms that integrating maqāsid perspectives and gender justice strengthens normative understanding in a contextual manner without negating the foundational principles of Islamic law. This study recommends the development of participatory inheritance literacy models in Islamic educational institutions to prevent potential family conflicts and to foster reflective legal awareness among young Muslims.
