Abstract

Environmental pollution has become an increasingly important context in science education because it enables students to connect scientific concepts with authentic environmental challenges. Integrating environmental pollution issues into science learning is considered a promising approach to fostering students' environmental literacy and promoting sustainability-oriented education. This study aims to synthesize existing research on the integration of environmental pollution issues into science learning and examine its contribution to the development of students' environmental literacy. A literature review was conducted by analyzing relevant national and international publications focusing on pollution-based science learning, scientific literacy, environmental literacy, and education for sustainable development. The findings indicate that integrating environmental pollution issues into science learning enhances students' environmental literacy, scientific literacy, critical thinking skills, and environmentally responsible behavior. Student-centered instructional approaches, including problem-based learning, inquiry-based learning, socio-scientific issues, and sustainability-oriented learning, consistently provide more meaningful and reflective learning experiences. Furthermore, environmental pollution issues function not only as science content but also as authentic learning contexts that encourage critical reflection, environmental awareness, and sustainability-oriented decision-making. Despite these benefits, challenges remain in teachers' pedagogical readiness, instructional implementation, and the integration of sustainability perspectives into science classrooms. This review highlights the importance of contextualizing environmental pollution issues within science learning as an effective strategy for promoting environmental literacy and advancing sustainability-oriented.

Abstract

Pengelolaan sampah organik dan konservasi air masih menjadi persoalan utama di kawasan ekowisata pesisir, terutama pada wilayah dengan daya dukung lingkungan yang terbatas. Desa Apar, Kota Pariaman, sebagai kawasan ekowisata berbasis pesisir dan mangrove, menghadapi permasalahan meningkatnya timbulan sampah organik dari aktivitas rumah tangga dan wisata, serta rendahnya kemampuan tanah dalam meresapkan air yang berpotensi menimbulkan genangan dan degradasi lingkungan. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat pemberdayaan masyarakat melalui penerapan teknologi lubang resapan biopori sebagai solusi pengelolaan sampah organik dan konservasi air tanah. Mitra pengabdian meliputi masyarakat Desa Apar, perangkat desa, dan pelaku ekowisata yang terlibat aktif dalam seluruh tahapan kegiatan. Metode pengabdian dilaksanakan melalui sosialisasi lingkungan, pelatihan teknis pembuatan dan pemanfaatan biopori, penerapan teknologi di lokasi strategis, serta pendampingan dan evaluasi berkelanjutan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan meningkatnya pengetahuan, kesadaran, dan partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan lingkungan, berkurangnya pembuangan sampah organik ke lingkungan, serta terbentuknya kompos awal dari biopori yang dimanfaatkan untuk tanaman sekitar. Selain itu, biopori mampu meningkatkan daya resap tanah dan mengurangi genangan air di kawasan ekowisata. Hasil pengabdian ini menegaskan bahwa teknologi biopori yang diintegrasikan dengan pendekatan pemberdayaan masyarakat efektif mendukung pengelolaan lingkungan pesisir secara berkelanjutan dan berpotensi direplikasi pada kawasan ekowisata lainnya.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major vector-borne disease that imposes a significant public health burden in Indonesia. Effective dengue control necessitates active community participation, which can be optimized by enhancing health literacy through educational initiatives. This community-based action research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of health education in improving public knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding dengue prevention. The intervention was conducted among the Pemberdayaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (PKK—Family Welfare Movement) group in Tabing Banda Gadang Village, Padang City, utilizing lecture methods and interactive discussions covering etiology, transmission mechanisms, risk factors, and preventive strategies. Program evaluation was measured using a one-group pretest-posttest design with a structured questionnaire. The analysis demonstrated significant improvements across all indicators post-intervention: knowledge increased from 64.5% to 93.0%, attitude from 65.5% to 92.5%, and practice from 48.5% to 89.0%. The highest increase was observed in the practice domain (40.5%), followed by knowledge (28.5%) and attitude (27.0%). These findings confirm that community-based health education is effective in transforming public understanding and fostering preventive behavior. Consequently, this community-centered educational approach holds potential as a sustainable promotive and preventive strategy within national dengue control programs.
