Abstract

Istiqāmah is an essential attitude in life. However, it remains a concept that is easy to articulate but difficult to practice consistently among Muslims. This article explores the meaning of istiqāmah in the Qur'an through a thematic interpretation (Tafsīr maudhū‘ī) approach, focusing on two key verses: Surah al-Ahqāf/46:13 and Surah Fuṣṣilat/41:30. In addition, the article discusses the benefits of istiqāmah, including being a means for prayers to be granted, a cause for sustenance, and a source of optimism and self-confidence. The article also outlines steps to actualize istiqāmah, such as purifying intentions, maintaining earnest effort (ikhtiyār), and fostering a righteous social environment. This study employs a qualitative method in the form of library research, using Tafsīr al-Marāghī by Shaykh Aḥmad Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī as the primary source, and Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, Tafsīr al-Miṣbāḥ, along with several other references as secondary sources. The findings indicate that istiqāmah in the Qur’anic context refers to firmness in faith (‘aqīdah) and consistency in worship without associating partners with Allah. Those who uphold istiqāmah are promised tranquility, inner peace, and the reward of Paradise. These findings highlight the urgency of embodying istiqāmah in the lives of Muslims as a pathway to both spiritual and social success.

Abstract

Sufism serves as a guide and guideline for the journey of human life to achieve happiness in this world as well as salvation in the hereafter. Hermeneutics comes from the Greek hermeneuein which means to interpret, explain, or translate. The term is derived from the verb hermeneuein as well as the noun hermeneia. This study applies a qualitative approach with the library research method. The focus of his study is documents related to Sufism texts, especially regarding the interpretation of symbols and meanings in Sufistic works that are used as primary data sources. Meanwhile, supporting literature in the form of books and articles is used as a secondary data source. Sufism is one of the important branches of the Islamic intellectual tradition that was born as a response to the spiritual needs of the ummah to get closer to Allah. In addition to the practice of worship and inner journey, Sufism is also expressed in written works that are rich in thoughts, symbols, and spiritual experiences. In various works of Sufism, both in the form of prose, poetry, and poetry, Sufis often use symbolic language. It is an effective means of describing the inner state, mystical experiences, and intimate relationship with God. Symbols in Sufism works such as love, travel, unity, light, and beauty became a medium for Sufis to express inner experiences that were difficult to reach in ordinary language.
