Abstract

The digital era has brought serious challenges to the character development of students in schools and madrasahs, particularly in terms of communication ethics, responsibility, and spiritual awareness. Various negative behaviors in digital spaces indicate moral issues that require educational intervention. In this context, Islamic Religious Education (IRE) plays a strategic role in shaping students’ character based on akhlaq al-karimah. This study addresses the following research questions: (1) the position of Islamic Religious Education within the education system in the digital era; (2) the current condition of students’ character in the digital era; (3) the influence of the position of Islamic Religious Education on students’ character formation; and (4) the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting its role in the digital era. The study aims to examine in depth the position and influence of Islamic Religious Education on students’ character development amid technological advancement. This qualitative research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of academic publications from 2020 to 2025. The findings indicate that Islamic Religious Education functions as a value filter through the internalization of the concepts of ihsan and tabayyun in students’ digital activities. The study also proposes the “Digital Akhlakul Karimah” model, which integrates Islamic character values with digital competencies in schools and madrasahs
