Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents remains a significant public health concern. This case study was conducted at SMP Negeri X Garut to evaluate the effect of smoking hazard education on students’ knowledge. The initial assessment was carried out on August 5, 2025 through interviews and field observation involving 294 ninth-grade students using a smoking behavior questionnaire for children and adolescents from the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The assessment revealed that 23.8% of students had smoked, and 40% of them identified as active smokers. Based on these findings, an educational intervention was delivered on August 7, 2025 by a nurse for approximately 30 minutes using lecture and discussion methods supported by slides and video media. The material included clean and healthy living behavior, differences between active and passive smokers, harmful substances in cigarettes, the impact of smoking on health, and smoking cessation strategies. Evaluation was conducted using a five-item instrument developed by the researcher through pre-test and post-test. The results showed a descriptive increase in knowledge scores, but the change was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). This case study indicates that a single educational session is insufficient and highlights the need for continuous and interactive educational programs supported by schools and families.
