Abstract

The use of conventional solvents in the oil paint industry often leads to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and toxicity, so this study aims to evaluate the potential of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) as an environmentally friendly alternative solvent. FAME is synthesised from vegetable oil through a transesterification reaction, then formulated into alkyd resin-based paints with varying binder content (40%, 50%, and 60%) to be compared with acetone solvent. The paint performance evaluation includes tests on drying time, gloss level, hiding power, and Whiteness and Yellowness Index. The results show that FAME-based paints have a much higher gloss level (10–26 GU) than acetone (3–6 GU) because their slower evaporation rate provides optimal levelling time, though this results in much longer drying time, namely 780–819 minutes. In addition, FAME has been proven to produce better covering power and a lower Yellowness Index (1.39–4.15) than acetone (4.09–5.74). This superiority is influenced by the nature of FAME, which minimises damage to the polymer binder and uniformly disperses pigments, preventing agglomeration. Overall, FAME has great potential as a sustainable paint solvent that can improve optical and physical properties, although its formulation still requires optimisation to accelerate drying.

Abstract

Rising CO₂ emissions from industrial sectors drive the development of efficient and flexible carbon capture technologies. This review discusses membrane-based CO₂ capture with emphasis on membrane materials, transport mechanisms, and performance challenges under realistic operating conditions. The literature shows that polymer membranes, facilitated transport membranes, mixed matrix membranes, carbon molecular sieve membranes, and porous inorganic membranes each offer distinct advantages and limitations in permeability, selectivity, stability, and cost. Key challenges include low CO₂ partial pressure in post-combustion capture, the effects of moisture and contaminants, and material degradation such as plasticization and physical aging. Further progress requires material innovation, process optimization, and economic assessment to improve stability, efficiency, and industrial competitiveness in low-carbon applications

Abstract

This community service activity aims to utilize eggshell waste from household businesses as raw material for Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) to support sustainable agriculture in Siak Regency. The main problems faced by partners are high dependence on inorganic fertilizers, rising production costs, and suboptimal utilization of local organic waste. The activity was carried out through the stages of POC production, counseling, demonstrations, discussions, and product distribution to farmer groups. The POC formulation was made from eggshells, water, molasses, and EM4, then fermented for seven days. The results showed that the POC product had good physical characteristics, with changes in pH indicating optimal fermentation. The counseling and hands-on practice also increased farmers' knowledge and skills in processing eggshell waste into fertilizer that can be used independently. This program has the potential to reduce dependence on inorganic fertilizers, reduce production costs, and open up opportunities for the development of other organic waste-based products. Thus, this activity supports the implementation of sustainable agriculture and a circular economy at the community level.

Abstract

Abstract

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 11 and 12, is a top priority requiring the development of eco-friendly products and community empowerment through waste management. The Induk Pelangi Waste Bank in Siak Sri Indrapura is an active community-based waste management facility that requires support for infrastructure improvement. This program was conducted during October 2025, beginning with the identification of partner needs focused on the revitalization of the administration building. The solution was implemented through an appropriate technology approach, where the physical renovation process served as a vehicle for the application of eco-friendly natural rubber latex-based paint research. This innovative product is the result of research collaboration between Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya PSDKU Siak and the University of Riau. The paint application was carried out in two coats in a participatory manner on the building's interior and exterior. The results show that the administration building now appears neater and more presentable. Furthermore, this activity successfully demonstrated the viability of green technology and served as an educational medium that aligns the waste bank's infrastructure with the environmental values it promotes.
