Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic functions of the Cirebonese discourse particles tah and jeh in WhatsApp communication. These particles function not merely as grammatical markers but as indicators of the social and cultural identity of native Cirebon speakers. Employing a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, this study gathered responses from 15 participants representing diverse residential backgrounds and age groups (10–40 years and above). A corpus of naturally occurring WhatsApp conversations was also analysed to investigate the particles’ pragmatic functions in authentic digital contexts. The findings reveal that tah and jeh fulfil three principal functions: (1) phatic particles that sustain social cohesion in digital interaction, (2) epistemic modality markers distinguishing uncertainty (tah) from affirmation (jeh), and (3) active markers of Cirebonese identity within digital communicative spaces. Mean Likert scores indicate strong consensus that these particles function as identity markers (M=4.4), are avoided in formal contexts (M=4.5), and are used more intensively in exchanges with fellow Cirebon speakers (M=3.9). The majority of respondents (12/15) identify tah as a marker of questioning or doubt, and jeh as a marker of affirmation. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on regional language maintenance in digital communication

Abstract

English plays a crucial role in academic and professional fields, making the assessment of students English proficiency increasingly important. In Indonesia, the government has introduced the Tes Kemampuan Akademik (TKA) as a standardized assessment to measure students academic abilities. This study aims to examine the ability of students at SMAN 4 Kota Sukabumi toward the English TKA, focusing on language aspects such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and students perceptions of the test. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed via Google Form to twelfth-grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Sukabumi during the 2024/2025 academic year. The questionnaire used a Likert scale and open-ended responses to explore students experiences, perceived difficulties, and attitudes toward the English TKA. The findings show that most students perceive English TKA as more difficult than regular school examinations, particularly in the reading section due to time management issues. Vocabulary was generally not considered a major obstacle. However, students reported insufficient guidance and specific strategies from teachers in preparing for the English TKA. Despite these challenges, the majority of students agreed that English TKA effectively measures their overall English proficiency and motivates them to study English more seriously. In conclusion, English TKA is perceived as a relevant and comprehensive assessment tool. Greater instructional support and strategic preparation are needed to improve students readiness and performance.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the phonological system of the Sundanese language and analyze how the characteristics of the sound function as a pillar of identity for the speaking community. As the regional language with the second largest number of speakers in Indonesia, Sundanese has a phonetic uniqueness that clearly distinguishes it from other cognate languages. Furthermore, in an ethnolinguistic perspective, the vowel 'eu' is analyzed as a symbol of the collective identity of the Sundanese people. The results show that the use of the vowel 'eu' is not just an articulatory phenomenon, but a representation of a "sense of language" rooted in local values. In the midst of modernization and the influence of urban Indonesian, this vowel is an indicator of the vitality of the language as well as a boundary marker for its speakers. This study concludes that the preservation of the vowel 'eu' in daily speech practice is an active effort to maintain the integrity of Sundanese language identity in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of sound repetition in Indonesian TikTok speech through a phonological–pragmatic framework. In contrast to morphological reduplication and syntactic repetition, the repetition observed in TikTok oral discourse operates primarily at the level of sound and prosody, serving as a strategy to emphasize meaning and intensify emotional expression. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes spoken data drawn from Indonesian TikTok videos featuring spontaneous verbal interaction. Selected utterances were transcribed and examined by identifying recurring sound sequences and interpreting their pragmatic functions within specific discourse contexts. The findings indicate that sound repetition predominantly occurs in vowel-based and consonant-based patterns, accompanied by rhythmic timing, accelerated tempo, and consistent pitch contours. Pragmatically, these repetitions function to amplify emotional stance, foreground salient discourse moments, and enhance humorous effects. This study contributes to phonological and pragmatic scholarship by highlighting the significance of sound-based emphasis strategies in digital spoken communication.

Abstract

Listening ability is an essential skill in learning English and plays an important role in daily communication, especially in understanding spoken messages. However, many students still experience difficulties in listening comprehension, particularly in recognizing and distinguishing homophones. This study aims to analyze and describe the listening ability of third-semester students of class 3B, English Education Department, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, in identifying English homophones. It also examines which homophones most frequently cause errors and identifies the factors influencing these difficulties, as well as the instructional implications. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected through a homophone listening test consisting of ten multiple-choice questions and five essay questions. The findings reveal that students’ ability to recognize homophones varies. Homophones with high phonological similarity tend to cause more errors, especially when they are presented without sufficient contextual support. In addition, factors such as speech rate, speaker accent, cognitive load, and limited listening practice contribute to students’ difficulties in understanding homophones. These findings highlight the importance of implementing more contextual and structured listening instruction to help students better understand and distinguish homophones.

Abstract

This research investigates the wording and figurative language used by Peter Drury during the Liverpool vs Manchester United match on March 5, 2023, which ended in a 7–0 victory for Liverpool. The study aims to analyze how the selection of words, metaphors, hyperbole, and rhetorical devices shape the emotional intensity and dramatic narrative of the match. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research focuses on commentary utterances selected from the match transcript, highlighting evaluative language and stylistic patterns. Findings reveal that Drury’s wording evolves from neutral description to expressive exaggeration in line with the unfolding scoreline. Metaphors such as “A Kop explosion” and “red utopia,” evaluative phrases like “formidable” and “day of his life,” and rhetorical questions contribute to constructing a sense of dominance, unpredictability, and historical significance. The commentator’s stylistic choices amplify excitement, convey the atmosphere, and transform the match into a performative spectacle for viewers. The study underscores the role of sports commentary as a performative discourse, showing that linguistic creativity in live commentary not only informs but also emotionally engages the audience, enhancing the overall football viewing experience.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of Betawi and Indonesian vocabulary among third semester students of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach, with data collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Form to 20 respondents. The research instrument used a 5-point Likert scale to measure the frequency of use of Betawi and Indonesian vocabulary as well as factors influencing language choice. The results of the study show that Betawi vocabulary is still predominantly used in informal communication among students, especially commonly used expressions such as gue/gua, lu, banget, and udah. In contrast, Indonesian is more often used in formal and academic contexts, especially when communicating with lecturers. Environmental factors, peer interaction, and social media exposure were identified as the main factors influencing the use of Betawi vocabulary. These findings reveal the existence of situational code mixing, where students can tailor their language choices according to the context of communication. Therefore, the use of Betawi and Indonesian vocabulary does not reflect linguistic conflicts but rather shows students' linguistic awareness and social identity in urban environments.

Abstract

Overlap in geopolitical debates, particularly the Israel-Palestine conflict, remains underexplored in conversation analysis research. This study addresses that gap through the case of “Can Israel Make Peace with Hamas?”, a debate on the Open to Debate YouTube channel marked by confrontation between speakers holding opposing positions. Using Jefferson's (1983)overlap-onset framework and Schegloff's (2000) resolution mechanisms, this qualitative case study analyzes 133 turns of talk produced by two debaters, Cenk Uygur and Mosab Hassan Yousef, and moderator John Donvan, to identify overlap types and how speakers manage simultaneous talk. The findings reveal 24 instances of overlap onset (18.04%), with recognitional onset as the most dominant type, accounting for 16 instances (12.03%), followed by transitional onset with 8 instances (6.01%), and no progressional onset observed. As for resolution, 22 instances were identified (16.54%), with withdrawal as the most frequent mechanism, accounting for 10 instances (7.52%), followed by persistence with 8 instances (6.02%) and acoustic upgrade with 4 instances (3.01%). These findings demonstrate that overlap functioned as a deliberate rhetorical strategy reflecting power, urgency, and argumentative control in this case, not as a generalizable claim about geopolitical debate.
