Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, with type II diabetes mellitus contributing the majority of cases due to unhealthy dietary patterns, low levels of knowledge, and poor adherence in disease management. Proper dietary management is essential to control blood glucose levels and prevent complications. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and dietary adherence with blood glucose levels among patients with type II diabetes mellitus in the inpatient ward of RSUD Tarutung. This study used a quantitative method with an analytic approach and a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 54 patients, and total sampling was applied. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results show that there is a significant relationship between knowledge level and blood glucose levels (p=0.000; r=-0.598) as well as between dietary adherence and blood glucose levels (p=0.001; r=-0.434). Both variables show moderate negative correlations, indicating that better knowledge and higher dietary adherence are associated with better-controlled blood glucose levels. In conclusion, knowledge and dietary adherence play an important role in controlling blood glucose levels among patients with type II diabetes mellitus. It is recommended that health professionals enhance patient education and that future researchers examine other factors influencing blood glucose levels using more diverse research designs.

Abstract

Background: Iron supplementation in pregnant women is one of the key interventions recommended to prevent anemia and support the health of both the mother and the fetus. The increased need for iron during pregnancy makes supplementation a primary strategy in maternal health care. However, it is important to note that excessive iron intake has the potential to cause side effects such as iron overload, which can increase oxidative stress and insulin resistance in pregnant women. These conditions are suspected to contribute to an increased risk of pregnancy complications, one of which is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of iron (Fe) supplementation on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus during pregnancy. Methods: This study employed a literature review design. Article retrieval was conducted through three databases—Google Scholar, DOAJ, and PubMed—using the keywords “iron supplementation,” “iron supplementation,” and “gestational diabetes risk.” Inclusion criteria included articles published between 2018 and 2023. The search yielded 5 relevant articles for comprehensive review. Results: Analysis of the selected articles indicates a trend toward an increased risk of GDM in pregnant women receiving iron supplementation, particularly when iron levels are already high. Therefore, the administration of iron supplements should be approached with caution if a pregnant woman has GDM. Conclusion: Iron supplementation is associated with an increased risk of GDM; therefore, its use should be tailored to the individual needs of the pregnant woman.

Abstract

Background: Cancer is a non-communicable disease whose incidence continues to rise and can be influenced by various factors, including lifestyle and dietary patterns from an early age. The habit of consuming low-fiber foods and minimal intake of vegetables and fruits in elementary school children has the potential to form unhealthy eating patterns that continue into adulthood. This condition can increase the risk of various degenerative diseases, including cancer. Vegetables and fruits are known to contain various important nutrients, especially antioxidants, which play a role in protecting body cells from damage caused by free radicals and supporting the body's defense system. Therefore, nutrition education from elementary school age is a strategic step in the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Objective: This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to increase elementary school students' knowledge and awareness of the importance of consuming vegetables and fruits as sources of antioxidants in the early prevention of cancer. Method: The activity was carried out at SD Negeri 104242 Lubuk Pakam through an interactive educational approach that included counseling, the use of visual media, educational games, and simple discussions tailored to the characteristics and level of understanding of elementary school children. Results and Discussion: The results of the activity showed an increase in students’ understanding from 60% before the education session to 85% after the session, representing a 25% increase in their knowledge of types of vegetables and fruits, the health benefits of antioxidants, and the importance of adopting healthy eating habits. Conclusion: This activity has the potential to be a preventive measure in shaping healthy lifestyles and increasing nutritional awareness from elementary school age.

Abstract

Background: Durian is a tropical fruit with a unique flavour and intense aroma. All parts of durian are reported to have many health benefits, especially the seeds. The seeds are known to have higher antioxidant activity and phytochemical compound than the pulp. Durian seeds are food waste that has the potential to be reused in the food and health industry. Objective: This article provides information on the presence of bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, and the potential use of durian seeds as therapeutic agents. Methods: The study used a scoping review with four databases: Google Scholar, PubMed, DOAJ, and ScienceDirect. Scoping is needed to complete the article, summarize scientific data, and as a future reference regarding the nutraceutical potential of durian seeds. Results: A total of 6 articles were reviewed based on the screening results. The bioactive compounds found in these articles are phenolics, flavonoids, α-tocopherol, terpenoids, saponins, anthraquinones, and several flavonoid classes such as catechin, rutin, isoquercitrin, quercitrin. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity were highest in the Chanee durian seed cultivar compared to the Monthong type and various other cultivars from several countries. Conclusion: Durian seeds as food waste seem to have potential as a nutraceutical. Known as food waste that is rarely utilized, based on several studies, durian seeds have several benefits, one of which is to overcome various diseases. Further research needs to be done to prove that durian seeds can be helpful in the food industry as well as in pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
