Abstract

The use of non linear loads in high rise elevator systems, such as Variable Speed Drives (VSD), provides significant energy efficiency, but on the other hand causes harmonic distortion. This study aims to analyze the harmonic characteristics of a 6 unit elevator system in the PT ASIM Tower using the Total Demand Distortion (TDD) parameter based on the IEEE 519-1992 standard. Measurements were taken at the 400 V voltage common coupling point. The measurement results showed current harmonic distortion (THDi) values of 86% for phase R, 77% for phase S, and 74% for phase T. To assess compliance with IEEE 519-1992, the Total Demand Distortion (TDD) limit was determined based on the ratio between the available short-circuit current (Isc) and the maximum demand load current (IL) at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The calculated Isc/IL ratio placed the system in the IEEE 519-1992 category with a maximum allowable TDD limit of 8%. Based on the calculated compensation current requirement, an Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) with a nominal capacity of 32.34 A was identified as a potential mitigation measure. However, verification through post-installation measurements or simulation studies is required to confirm the final TDD level.
