Abstract

The Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) is an organization that was established in response to the needs of intellectuals during the New Order era. The organization aims to strengthen faith and piety (Imtaq) as well as science and technology (IPTEK) as the foundation for building a civil society. Therefore, to reach various regions, Regional Organizations (Orwil), District Organizations (Orda), and Unit Organizations (Orsat) were established. Through historical research methods, this article has undergone the stages of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Consequently, it was found that as a fairly large regional organization, ICMI Orwil West Java plays a significant role in carrying out the tasks to fulfill the mission and objectives of the central ICMI. Thus, one of the influential aspects in its journey is the leadership’s background regarding the planned programs. ICMI West Java Regional Chapter’s programs address various aspects of society, particularly to improve human resource quality and enhance the quality of systems within political, social, and economic processes. Empowering the community through the economy demonstrates the synergy and commitment between ICMI West Java Regional Branch, ICMI Central, and autonomous bodies to collaborate with one another in fostering community self-reliance through various trainings, seminars, cooperatives, or by serving as partners and facilitators for the community.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the state of education in Indonesia, which remains inaccessible to all segments of society facing various limitations. Ivan Illich’s book Deschooling Society introduces a new perspective: that education is not limited to formal schools but is also acquired through the environment and habits formed from an early age. The book was written against a social backdrop that closely mirrors the state of education in Indonesia. The research method employed for this article is descriptive qualitative. The sources used for this research include literature reviews, interviews, and Ivan Illich’s book Deschooling of Society. Data analysis employs the Miles and Huberman interactive model. This article demonstrates the relevance between Ivan Illich’s ideas and open schools. Open schools serve as a solution for students who have dropped out due to economic constraints, limited transportation, and a social and cultural environment that does not support access to education. Open schools offer flexible learning schedules—conducted on specific days—while still granting the same diplomas as formal schools. The educational monopoly criticized by Ivan Illich in his book can be addressed through the existence of open schools. Although there are differences in practice—such as Ivan Illich’s rejection of diploma recognition, the abolition of formal education, and the methods used in learning—open schools provide a viable alternative.

Abstract

Gapura Pancawaluya is a local character education concept implemented in West Java. Gapura Pancawaluya contains five characters expected by the West Java education office to be in students at school, namely cageur (healthy), bageur (good), bener (correct), pinter (smart), tur singer (skilled). The characters contained in Gapura Pancawaluya can be implemented in schools with habituation activities related to character education in the Merdeka curriculum. However, in reality, schools face challenges in aligning the Gapura Pancawaluya program with the material in history subjects. This study aims to implement the Gapura Pancawaluya program and to develop history learning grounded in the local character of Gapura Pancawaluya within the Merdeka curriculum. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method that involves interviews with experts and the analysis of library sources such as books, journals, and scientific articles. The results of this study indicate a relevance between the local character of Gapura Pancawaluya and the character education contained in the Merdeka curriculum. Furthermore, the values embodied in the Gapura Pancawaluya can also be incorporated into history lessons within the Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, history lessons that implement the Gapura Pancawaluya become more meaningful because they are accompanied by the instillation of moral values embedded in each step of the classroom. Therefore, this research can contribute to and inspire teachers in developing contextual history learning tools based on local character.
