Abstract

The words sharih and kinayah hold a crucial position in the study of ushul fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) because they are related to understanding the meaning of texts as the basis for establishing Islamic law. Sharih is a word with a clear and directly understood meaning, while kinayah uses indirect expressions that require interpretation based on context and intention. The application of these two forms of wording can be found in the verses of the Quran, both in the form of explicit commands and prohibitions as well as in figurative expressions containing profound meaning. The difference in character between sharih and kinayah has implications for the process of legal istinbath, where sharih tends to produce legal certainty, while kinayah can give rise to differences of opinion among scholars.
