Abstract

Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS) play an important role in urban waste management, but their proximity to residential areas can trigger environmental and health problems. The TPS at Belakang Tangsi, Padang Barat, is directly adjacent to a densely populated settlement, making it a critical case to study. This research assessed its impact on environmental health using a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observations, questionnaires from 75 residents, and interviews with sanitation workers and local officials. Descriptive statistics and relational analysis were applied to evaluate community perceptions and health concerns. Findings show that most residents reported foul odors, increased flies and rodents, and reduced comfort, with 68% experiencing direct disturbances and 53% expressing health concerns. These results highlight that poorly managed TPS near settlements not only degrade sanitation but also raise psychosocial stress and disease risk. The novelty of this study lies in documenting the specific impacts of an urban TPS located within dense residential areas, providing evidence for the urgent need to improve management, strengthen community-based waste sorting, and reconsider TPS placement in urban planning.

Abstract

This study evaluated the association between exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) due to deforestation and forest fires and the risk of respiratory disorders in local communities in Kalimantan, Indonesia. A mixed-methods design with an observational epidemiological approach was used to evaluate the impact of exposure to PM2.5 on acute respiratory infections (ARI), asthma exacerbations, and community lung function. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of respiratory diseases and socioeconomic factors influencing exposure levels. Field measurements of PM2.5 both indoors and outdoors were used to estimate population exposure based on time-activity and indoor/outdoor ratios. Results showed that outdoor workers had an average exposure of 156.3 g/m3-hour, significantly higher than indoor workers, and this difference was significant (p  0.001). Indoor workers had a mean exposure of 88.5 l/hr, and the difference was statistically significant. The regression model showed that every 10 m3 increase in PM2.5 increased the odds of ARI by 11% (OR=1.11, 95%CI: 1.06-1.17). This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening the air quality monitoring system, health early warning, and stricter land use regulations to improve community resilience to future recurring haze events.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the relationship between marine pollution exposure levels and the risk of gastrointestinal health disorders in coastal fishing communities in Semarang City, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to October 2025 in the Tambaklorok and Tanjung Emas areas, which are areas with high seafood consumption patterns and exposure to marine environments. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire covering respondent characteristics, seafood consumption habits, and gastrointestinal complaints using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). All respondents (100%) tested positive for microplastic exposure in feces with an average concentration of 18.4  6.7 particles/gram, dominated by PE, PP, and PS polymers, as well as heavy metal levels (Hg, Pb, Cd) through AAS or ICP-MS. Microplastics were the strongest predictor of increased GSRS scores (=0.37, p0.001), followed by blood mercury levels and inadequate sanitation conditions, with the model able to explain 43-47% of the variation in symptoms. This research fills a gap in the literature regarding marine pollution risk in Indonesia and provides a scientific basis for developing environmental health policies, coastal waste management, and more targeted public health intervention programs for fishing communities.
