Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue that adversely affects children's growth and development, and remains a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, including in the Porong Health Center area, Sidoarjo. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two counseling methods—Emo Demo and lectures—on improving the attitudes of mothers with stunted children under five. A pre-experimental design with one-group pretest–posttest was used, involving 20 respondents who were divided evenly into two groups. Each group received nutrition counseling using either the Emo Demo or lecture method. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test and the Independent T-Test/Mann-Whitney to measure changes and compare attitudes before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in maternal attitudes within both groups: Emo Demo (p = 0.001) and lecture (p = 0.045). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods (p = 0.121). Despite this, the average increase in attitude scores was higher in the Emo Demo group (27%) compared to the lecture group (13%). These findings suggest that while both methods are effective in improving attitudes toward balanced nutrition, the Emo Demo method may offer greater practical impact in supporting behavior change among mothers.

Abstract

Background stunting is still a serious problem in Indonesia, including in Klitik Village, Geneng District, Ngawi Regency, with a fairly high prevalence rate. Purpose This study aims to determine the description of energy intake, protein and infectious diseases of stunted toddlers in Klitik village, Geneng district, Ngawi regency. Method: This study is a descriptive study with 28 stunted toddlers as a sample. Energy and protein intake data were obtained through 24-hour recall, and infectious disease data through interviews using questionnaires; The analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate (cross table).  Result The results showed that the majority of the stunted toddlers in Klitik Village are male and are in the age group of 48–59 months. As many as 67.8% of toddlers have less energy intake and 64.3% have less protein intake. Most also had a history of infectious diseases (60.8%), including diarrhea (82.1%) and ISPA (67.9%). Bivariate analysis showed a tendency that toddlers with less energy and protein intake developed infectious diseases, which can worsen stunting conditions. Conclusion Therefore, nutritional interventions accompanied by efforts to prevent and handle infectious diseases need to be the focus in overcoming stunting in the region.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional problem among adolescents that increases the risk of giving birth to babies with low birth weight and stunting. This study aims to describe the knowledge level of adolescent girls about CED and stunting, as well as their nutritional status based on Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) measurements at SMAN 19 Surabaya. This descriptive observational study used a simple random sampling technique with informed consent from respondents. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires to assess knowledge, and MUAC measurements to evaluate nutritional status. The data were then analyzed using cross-tabulation. The results showed that most respondents had sufficient knowledge about CED (47.2%) but poor knowledge about stunting (52.8%), with the majority categorized as non-CED based on MUAC. Cross-tabulation indicated that knowledge is not always directly associated with nutritional status, particularly regarding stunting. These findings highlight the need for integrated school-based nutrition education programs to mitigate the intergenerational impact of malnutrition and stunting.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional issue with long-term implications for the health and productivity of adolescent girls. This study aimed to analyze the determinants associated with CED among seventh- and eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 44 Surabaya. Using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, the study involved 69 respondents selected via stratified random sampling. Data were collected through mid-upper arm circumference measurements, dietary intake questionnaires, assessments of nutritional knowledge, physical activity, and sociodemographic factors. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test. The results showed a CED prevalence of 81.2%, with most respondents experiencing deficits in energy (89.9%) and carbohydrate intake (98.6%). Significant associations were found between energy intake (p=0.012), carbohydrate intake (p=0.037), and nutritional knowledge (p=0.015) with CED status. Other variables, including protein and fat intake, physical activity, parental education and income, and body image perception, were not significantly associated. The study concludes that low energy and carbohydrate intake, along with limited nutritional knowledge, are key contributors to CED. School-based nutritional interventions and parental involvement are essential strategies to prevent CED in adolescents.
