Abstract

Background: Stunting in toddlers is primarily caused by inadequate macronutrient intake and repeated infections. This study aims to describe the intake of macronutrients and the history of infectious diseases among stunted toddlers in the working area of Kamal Health Center, Bangkalan Regency. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving 25 stunted toddlers. Stunting status was assessed using height-for-age z-scores. Data on macronutrient intake (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates) and history of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and diarrhea were collected through structured interviews with caregivers. The data were analyzed using frequency and percentage distributions. Results: Most subjects were girls (52%) and aged 24–36 months (36%). Energy intake deficits were found in 72% of toddlers, protein in 84%, fat in 76%, and carbohydrates in 68%. All respondents had experienced at least one ARI episode, and 56% had a history of diarrhea. Many children with infections also had light to moderate macronutrient deficits. Conclusion: Chronic deficits in energy and protein, combined with frequent infections, exacerbate the risk of stunting. Integrated nutrition and infection control interventions—especially for children aged 24–36 months—are essential. Strong policy support and improved parental education are needed to implement effective stunting reduction programs at the community level.

Abstract

It is known that the Candi Health Center working area which is the locus of stunting in 2022 is Larangan Village with a prevalence of 13.9%. To determine and analyze the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding patterns and the incidence of stunting in 6-24 month old children in Larangan Village. Observational research, making observations of research subjects without intervening. Cross sectional design. The results showed that most of the newborns in Larangan Village who were not only breastfed were 44 newborns (64.6%), and 24 newborns who were exclusively breastfed (35.4%). The results of the study showed that 54 (79.5%) baduta in Desa Larangan had a non-standard complementary food feeding pattern, compared to 14 (20.5%) baduta with a non-standard complementary food feeding pattern. The results showed that 25 out of 68 baduta were stunted, which amounted to 36.7%. After being tested with chi square, there was an association between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding patterns with the incidence of stunting. It is expected to be an input, especially for the Larangan Village community, about the importance of a history of exclusive breastfeeding patterns and complementary feeding patterns to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional issue with long-term implications for the health and productivity of adolescent girls. This study aimed to analyze the determinants associated with CED among seventh- and eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 44 Surabaya. Using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, the study involved 69 respondents selected via stratified random sampling. Data were collected through mid-upper arm circumference measurements, dietary intake questionnaires, assessments of nutritional knowledge, physical activity, and sociodemographic factors. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test. The results showed a CED prevalence of 81.2%, with most respondents experiencing deficits in energy (89.9%) and carbohydrate intake (98.6%). Significant associations were found between energy intake (p=0.012), carbohydrate intake (p=0.037), and nutritional knowledge (p=0.015) with CED status. Other variables, including protein and fat intake, physical activity, parental education and income, and body image perception, were not significantly associated. The study concludes that low energy and carbohydrate intake, along with limited nutritional knowledge, are key contributors to CED. School-based nutritional interventions and parental involvement are essential strategies to prevent CED in adolescents.
