Abstract

Infectious diseases are conditions caused by the entry of microorganisms into the body, leading to illness. One of the causes of infection is the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. Continuous use of antibiotics can lead to resistance, thus alternative treatments such as the use of natural substances are needed. One of these alternatives is clove leaf. Clove leaves contain essential oil ranging from 1-4%, with eugenol as the main component. Eugenol has pharmacological activity as both an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of clove leaf oil against Propionibacterium acnes, specifically in determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Clove leaf oil was obtained through water distillation with a yield of 2.88%. The MIC test was performed using the agar diffusion method, while the MBC test was conducted using the streaking method. The results showed that clove leaf oil exhibits antibacterial activity that increases with increasing concentration. The MIC was obtained at a concentration of 5 mg/mL with a zone of inhibition diameter of 8.13 mm, while the MBC was at a concentration of 20 mg/mL. This antibacterial activity is attributed to the eugenol content in clove leaf oil, which can damage bacterial cell membranes and increase intracellular protein leakage. These findings indicate that clove leaf oil has potential as an effective natural antibacterial agent against Propionibacterium acnes and could serve as an alternative herbal treatment. Abstract

Background: Moringa leaves contain secondary metabolites with antioxidant activity that play a role in maintaining skin moisture. Body butter is a cosmetic preparation that is more effective in retaining skin moisture compared to other topical formulations. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of body butter containing Moringa oleifera L. leaf extract in improving skin moisture. Methods: This study was an experimental research. Moringa leaf extraction was carried out using the maceration method. The extract was formulated into body butter at concentrations of 5% (FI), 7% (FII), and 9% (FIII), while the base formulation without extract (F0) served as a negative control. The prepared formulations were evaluated for physical properties, including organoleptic characteristics, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, formulation stability, and skin irritation. The moisturizing effectiveness was measured using a skin analyzer. Results: The results showed that all body butter formulations containing moringa leaf extract were physically stable and did not cause skin irritation. The moisturizing test demonstrated a significant increase in skin moisture at all extract concentrations. The 9% extract formulation (FIII) showed the highest increase in skin moisture, from 18.33% to 57.33% after four weeks, approaching the effectiveness of the positive control (59%). These findings indicate that the moisturizing effectiveness increased with higher extract concentrations. Conclusion: Ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera L. leaves can be formulated into a stable body butter preparation and is effective as a skin moisturizer. Abstract
