Abstract

Methylene blue adsorption research has been conducted using bioadsorbents from activated carbon of coffee grounds and reeds. Coffee grounds and reeds contain carbon and cellulose that are effective for binding dyes. This study aims to determine the characteristics of activated carbon from coffee grounds and reeds based on SNI-06-3730-1995 and assess the color reduction of wastewater referring to the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51/MENLH/1995, which sets the maximum methylene blue content in industrial wastewater at 5-10 mg/L. The research method includes bioadsorbent preparation, characterization, and adsorption process with UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis. Mass ratio variation was conducted on each adsorbent at each contact time variation and methylene blue concentration variation. The results of the analysis showed that the activated carbon of coffee grounds and reeds fulfills SNI-06-3730-1995 which is characterized by values that are below the maximum value in each parameter. The effectiveness of methylene blue adsorption by coffee grounds and reeds activated carbon reached 98.15% at a ratio of coffee grounds and reeds activated carbon 0:1 (w/w) for 120 minutes at a concentration of 25 mg/L. The adsorption capacity using the Freundlich isotherm method on reed activated carbon was 1.100 mg/g and coffee grounds activated carbon was 1.019 mg/g. The adsorption process of coffee grounds and reeds activated carbon has no effect on the carbon and cellulose structure of coffee grounds and reeds contained in activated carbon, namely O-H, C-H, C=C, and C=O.

Abstract

School waste management is a critical issue in Indonesia as it has not been prioritized effectively. Students generate approximately 25–100 grams of waste per day, potentially affecting environmental quality and public health. To address this issue, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture introduced the Adiwiyata program in 2015 to encourage environmentally conscious schools. As part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, community service activities support knowledge transfer between universities and society to strengthen this program. This activity was conducted at SMPN 15 Bandung through demonstrations and counseling involving students and teachers, emphasizing circular economy principles and environmental empowerment. Ecoprint innovation introduced eco-friendly totebag coloring using natural plant pigments. Ecocraft activities promoted recycling through keychain production to increase material value. Additionally, ecofood innovation highlighted the utilization of watermelon rind, containing water, fiber, and bioactive compounds, as a value-added food product to reduce waste and improve economic potential.

Abstract

The growth and development of the population have significantly accelerated economic progress within society. Consequently, many new businesses have emerged, including commercial laundry services. One of the substances found in laundry wastewater, phosphate can cause eutrophication, which disrupts the balance of aquatic ecosystems. One method that can be developed to address this issue is adsorption technology. The aim of this research was to lower the phosphat content and to meet the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia No. 5 of 2014. The increasing number of coffee shops generates coffee grounds that have the potential to be processed into activated carbon. Additionally, fly ash a by-product of coal combustion contains silica and can be used as an adsorbent. The activated carbon is activated using 0.1 N NaOH and combined with fly ash in various compositions: 2:8, 4:6, 5:5, 6:4, and 8:2. Besides the variation in composition, contact time is also varied 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, and 150 minutes. The observed parameters include pH and phosphate concentration at each contact time. The research results show that the optimal composition is 0.2AC:0.8FA with the highest phosphate removal efficiency of 60.3% at 150 minutes contact time and a pH of 7.1. However, the final phosphate concentration has not yet met the quality standard of 2 mg/L set by the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia No. 5 of 2014.
