Abstract

This study aims to empower the community of Meler Village in managing plastic waste, particularly bottle caps, by transforming it into a functional product in the form of a table with an ecobrick-based foundation. Bottle caps represent a small-sized plastic waste category that is difficult to decompose and has the potential to become a significant source of microplastics in the environment. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the program was carried out through community outreach, ecobrick making training, and practical activities in arranging bottle caps as the table surface. Data were collected through observations and documentation throughout the implementation process. The results show that the community successfully produced one eco-friendly table, featuring a top surface composed of plastic bottle caps and a base supported by ecobricks. The product demonstrates not only aesthetic value and structural strength but also environmental benefits by reducing plastic waste. This empowerment initiative has enhanced community awareness, skills, and participation in recycling-based waste management and has the potential to serve as a sustainable waste management model at the village level.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the issue that the role of educators in shaping student character at Raka Catholic Elementary School has not been carried out effectively. The purpose of this study is to describe the role of teachers in shaping students’ character values at Raka Catholic Elementary School. The focus of this study is the role of teachers as mentors and role models in fostering student character outside of classroom learning activities. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method, employing three data collection techniques: observation, interviews, and documentation. Descriptive qualitative research aims to reveal issues, conditions, and events. The research findings indicate that teachers’ role as mentors in shaping students’ character has not yet been fully realized. Meanwhile, teachers’ role as role models is functioning well, as evidenced by their religious devotion, discipline, sense of responsibility, honesty, hard work, and social awareness, all of which are reflected in their daily lives within the school environment. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the role of teachers as mentors has not been fully realized, whereas their role as role models has been effective in shaping students’ character values at SDK Raka. The ineffectiveness of the teacher’s role as a mentor is evident in the suboptimal implementation of certain character values such as discipline, responsibility, independence, hard work, honesty, and social concern which have not been consistently applied by students, although religious character values have been implemented quite well. Meanwhile, the role of teachers as role models has been carried out effectively, as evidenced by their attitudes, behaviors, and concrete examples in various daily activities within the school environment.
