Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relevance of John Rawls's social philosophy, specifically justice as fairness and public reason, as a philosophical foundation for the substantive implementation of the concept of popular sovereignty. This study maps the conceptual correspondence between Rawls's two ideas and the four core principles of popular sovereignty, namely the principles of liberty, justice, majority rule, and accountability. Methodology: This study employs library research with a socio-political philosophy approach, encompassing four stages. Findings: Justice as fairness represents the principles of liberty and justice in popular sovereignty through Rawls's two main principles of justice: the guarantee of equal basic liberties for every individual, and the arrangement of social and economic inequalities to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged. Meanwhile, public reason represents the principles of majority rule and accountability by emphasizing that every public decision must be grounded in a collective rationality that embodies the principle of reciprocity and remains accountable to all citizens. Implications: Policy formulation that goes beyond the mere will of the majority by integrating the principle of reciprocity to protect the basic rights of all citizens; furthermore, public reason can serve as a basis for advocacy to ensure that citizen participation is not merely procedural, but also substantive and accountable. Originality: Enriches the understanding of popular sovereignty, shifting it from a mere political procedure into a value system rooted in fundamental liberty and the substantive distribution of justice, while simultaneously providing a critical contribution to the development of deliberative democracy theory.

Abstract

Human trafficking is a transnational crime and a severe violation of human rights that continues to evolve with globalization and advances in digital technology. In Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia and Myanmar, a novel pattern of trafficking has emerged involving forced criminality within online scam operations, entrapping thousands of Indonesian citizens. This study employs a comprehensive literature review methodology, analyzing legal frameworks, international reports, government policies, and Islamic scholarly sources to investigate the factors driving human trafficking in the region and to explore its prevention from an Islamic perspective. The findings identify key drivers, including economic vulnerability, limited educational opportunities, inadequate state oversight, social and moral crises, and the exploitation of digital technologies. From the Islamic ethical framework, human trafficking violates core principles such as karāmah insāniyyah (human dignity), ʿadl(justice), raḥmah (compassion), and ḥurriyyah (freedom), constituting a significant social sin that undermines societal moral fabric and humanitarian values. Consequently, effective prevention requires a multifaceted approach integrating robust legal enforcement, international collaboration, public awareness initiatives, and the reinforcement of religious and moral education. The study underscores the necessity of harmonizing legal, social, and Islamic strategies to protect human dignity and support the rehabilitation of trafficking survivors.

Abstract

The presence of niqab-wearing female students in higher education settings reflects diverse social dynamics, particularly in terms of academic community perceptions and the social interactions that develop around them. This study aims to analyze academic community perceptions of niqab-wearing female students, the factors influencing the adoption of the niqab, and the construction of religious identity within the academic environment of UIN Palopo. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research participants were purposively selected from members of the academic community, including students, niqab-wearing female students, and university representatives. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon under investigation. The findings indicate that academic community perceptions of niqab-wearing female students tend to be positive and inclusive, although some negative perceptions remain, particularly concerning limitations in social interaction. The adoption of the niqab is influenced by internal factors, such as religious motivations and the desire for self-preservation, as well as external factors, including the social environment and educational background. Furthermore, wearing the niqab represents a religious identity constructed through a process of social construction involving the externalization, objectivation, and internalization of religious values.
