Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to explain how the phenomenon of public Islam is manifested within urban da’wah practices by examining the dynamics of da’wah spaces, the transformation of religious authority, and the emerging orientation toward public welfare in urban life Method - Using a phenomenological approach, this study examines the lived experiences of informants involved in urban da’wah, both as preachers and as audiences Result  -  Urban da’wah is increasingly moving beyond traditional places of worship into more fluid public spaces. This spatial expansion goes hand in hand with the strengthening of democratized religious authority, where legitimacy is shaped by the relevance of the message and its resonance with the lived experiences of urban communities. The findings also indicate a strong orientation toward public welfare, reflected in social initiatives, the avoidance of sensitive themes, and efforts to maintain social harmony within the city’s diverse environment. Implication – These findings imply the need to redefine da’wah concepts to become more responsive to urban social ecologies and adaptive to contemporary modes of public communication. Originality/Value - Its originality lies in combining phenomenology with the public Islam framework to conceptualize urban da’wah as a multisited, dialogical, and welfare-oriented practice, offering fresh insights for developing contemporary da’wah theory.

Abstract

This article examines Al-Lathiif Mosque in Bandung as a heterotopic space that reflects the intersection of the sacred and the profane dimensions within urban society. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study explores how the mosque functions not only as a place of worship but also as a social, psychological, and cultural arena that responds to the complex needs of urban residents. The findings reveal that Al-Lathiif Mosque serves as an alternative space that offers inner tranquility, a slower rhythm of time, and an atmosphere that alleviates the pressures of urban life. At the same time, the mosque has evolved into an inclusive community space where diverse groups interact beyond rigid ideological boundaries. The mosque becomes a meeting point across identities while symbolizing reconciliation between tradition and modernity. These dynamics affirm that Foucault’s concept of heterotopia remains relevant for understanding the role of urban mosques as spaces that reconfigure the spiritual, social, and cultural experiences of urban communities.
